Progresso Beach

We like to do inexpensive shopping then hit the beach in most ports. We know the ship will dock at a long pier and a free shuttle will take us to the end(beginning) of the pier. We know there is a beach there with no facilities. We heard the current there was strong but I think that was in Jan. and we are going in April. Don't know if that makes a difference. Does anyone know-Is there shade there? How close is the nearest place to get a cold drink or use the restroom. Carnival has an excursion where they take you to the terrace of a restaurant/bar and you can walk across the street to swim in the gulf. Does this mean if you are swimming at the end of the pier you can walk across the street to the restaurant/bar, use the restroom and buy a drink? Thanks Darlene

Darlene,
Yes there is shade at the beach and my understanding is that they will come and serve drinks right on the beach. If they don't you can walk right across the street to grab a drink.-you can also walk to the small shopping area from the beach -the town is quite small. I would avoid walking into the meat market especially if you have a weak stomach.
Have a good time.

When we were there in November, we were eaten alive by bugs, and hounded by people selling things constantly. If I ever go back there, I definitely will stay on the ship and count it as a "sea day". Not sure why any cruise ships stop there.

The stop is a " gateway " to the wonderful Mayan sites of Uxmal and Chichen-Itza. The large and historic city of Merida is nearby. There are interesting tours to be had if one will check them out. It would be a shame to maybe miss out on some interesting history, sites, etc. by staying on the ship and saying there was nothing to see.

As far as bugs, I live in the deep south here in the U.S. There are probably just as many bugs here as in Progresso. Take and use bug spray.
