Will be stopping in Progresso, has anyone been there lately? I need some recommendations as to what to do in this port. What did you like best about Progresso? Help!

I just read some comments on the (pardon the expression) Cruise Critic board. Check the Celebrity forum, and you'll see a thread on Progreso - and it isn't very complimentary. Of particular discomfort are the legions of flies, both on shore and aboard ship. I certainly wouldn't eat anything - and that includes shipboard food - while docked there. I can live (literally!) without exotic Mexican diseases.

Thanks Al, I read that also. What a bummer. I wonder why Celebrity doesn't substitute this port at a time like this? I read that if you stay on board, you have to stay inside becuase the flys were all over the deck area. Yuck!!!! Guess I'll have to wait & see, & do a "spur of the moment" thing. Boy, & we are at Progreso for 11 hours.

Linda,

My family just returned from Progresso on the Carnival Pride. We did not notice any flies at all except in the fish-meat market we accidently wandered into.

The people were quite friendly -there are some shops and a little market area where the ships shuttle leave you off. There is a decent beach there as well but after the beautiful water in Cozumel we were content to just shop here. There is a Corona store in town where you can buy Coronas and a neclace to hold the bottle around your neck for $2US.There is also a shop that sells BEAUTIFUL Mexican ceramic sinks for 50-75$US.

We took the tour bus into Merida which is about an hour away-I was not thrilled with the City .Not everyone here speaks English or takes$US.I also found the people here much more aggressive than in Progresso itself. I brought my bus passes home-if you would like them I can send them to you they do not have a date on them.

Overall I would have prefered another day in Cozumel but it was interesting to see Progresso.

Have a great trip Wendy

Like Wendy, I too would have liked another day @ Cozumel or Grand Cayman. We had too little time at each of these ports & too much time at Progresso. It was really hot on the day we were there. The beach had very little shaded areas & it smelled bad. For those who went to Chitzen Itza it is a shorter ride than from Cozumel, so I guess there is 1 positive. I may be in the minority, but when I'm on vacation I want everything to be picture perfect. I can see "the barrio" by driving downtown, I don't need it on vacation. They had an ambulance parked where the bus from the ship drops you off, (?). We figured Mercury had so many OLD people on it that they were afraid of these folks having a stroke from the heat.
