Has anyone been to Progresso? We were supposed to stop on the Pride last year, but one of the Hurricanes in Sept. had other plans for us. We've decided on the Glory for this year, so maybe we'll get to see it after all.

Is there anything you can go do without an excursion (beaches, snorkeling, shopping etc...) or are we better off with a tour? any suggestions???

THANKS
Shannon

Hi Guys,

We were on the Pride in Nov and visited Progresso. We did not do a ship tour. It is a very small town.Quaint. Not much to do in Progresso itself except shop or beach. The day we were there the water was rough and it was overcast. Others on the ship hung at the beach and enjoyed it alot. There is some food and beverage service on the beach.

We took a bus ride to Merida which I personally did not care for.I found the people way to pushy. It was a long ride on a not so nice bus. Others said they found great bargains there.
One great bargain in Progresso was beautiful ceramic sinks for under $100 on the street in the town.

There is a small market with various vendors which was sort of fun and inexpensive.

Be sure to visit the Corona store to purchase your beer lanyard.

Hope I didn't ramble too much and this info helps.

Progresso is one port where I usually stay aboard the ship. Tours that are offered usually include a visit to one of the Mayan ruin sites. Very litle to do in Progresso on your own.

I liked Progresso. We split a van with another family and went into Merida. We met a man who showed us around for free. We did give him a little something. If you are interested in history or architecture check it out. We happened to go in to a 500 year old church on Holy Thursday. That was nice for us especially since we are Catholic. In Progresso we relaxed on the beach and had a swim. Some people said they were hounded by people selling things. We weren't. In fact we saw a guy with jewelry and wound up chasing him down the beach to get more. I don't know if my $5 sterling silver bracelet is real but, it looks good. T shirts were $2. We line dry ours and they still look new. I bought sleeveless dresses for $8. Short cover ups were about $5 and longer were about $10.

I find Progresso itself uninteresting - although above posters are correct - there are some good cheap souvenirs available. (If the elderly man with the 2 dogs is still going through the trash cans along the beach - please give him a couple of pesos - he does NOT beg and he is very kind to his dogs - He was very polite and dignified when I gave him my change.) I would recommend an excursion to one of the Mayan ruins - Uxmal is EXCELLENT if you like ruins. Dzbilchaltun is closer but the ruins are not as good as Uxmal. Dzbilchaltun also has an interesting small museum with some great artifacts and a nice cenote for a swim.
Personally I also liked Merida.
