Public Bus to Turtle Farm-Grand Cayman??

Looking for information from anyone who is familiar with the public bus transportation in Grand Cayman. I'd like to visit the Cayman Turtle Farm. The information I have so far indicates that the Route No. 1 buses (color-code yellow) go directly by the turtle farm and costs $2 per person. The main terminal is located adjacent to the Public Library on Edward St. in downtown George Town. Any assistance from someone who has experience using the buses would be appreciated.

We will be traveling on the Carnival Conquest. Is there a bus stop (or the terminal) near the port where we come ashore in Grand Cayman? I'll be researching maps and bus information while I'm waiting for replies......

Sorry... dont know a thing about the bus transportation there... but, you can get a taxi to take you to a few places if you like (a private island tour, so to speak - just tell them what you want to see). Personally, I didnt think the Turtle Farm was all that great, especially when you find out their main purpose in breeding them is for the meat. Only a small percentage are returned to the sea. We did get to pick a turtle up and hold it for a minute, that was kinda neat. They have all sizes from babies to older, huge ones. But other than that, its just a bunch of turtles in round, cement tanks that you look down into.

Have to agree with Nat, it is be similar to visiting a chicken farm. We thought it was a sad wate of time and that they could have done so much more to make it worthwhile, like putting in a museam/ exhibit/ display, that would educate you about the turtles.

The cement "vats" are just that, vats of turtles, it isn't a turtle "zoo" it's a meat farm.

here is the deal on the buses. The fare was $2.50 US for me in March. Exact change is encouraged. The place to catch the bus (a van really) was 2 blocks in from the tender dock then 2 or so blocks to the left. Just ask any local if you are going the right way. The bus system runs on "island time" that means the van won't leave until it is full, or close to it. The buses are used primarily by local people going to/from work.

Just tell the driver where you want to go and he'll stop when you get there. I took the bus to the Public Beach on 7 mile without any problems. Going to the turtle farm should also be no problem.

Have a great cruise and don't let anyone discourage you.

Bluefish,
To confirm, the bus accepted US currency in exact change form, correct? I always try to use the public transportation as it is so much more fun!
Thanks!

That is correct. I didn't have exactly $2.50, so 3 one dollar bills was my fare. Didn't expect change back either.

Two people would have a fare of $5 US, easy to manage that way.

Have a great time

we took the bus on our last cruise to grand cayman. It was very easy to find ( just a block or two straight in to town) and they will stop anywhere just tell them where you want to go. The people driving the bus deal with cruisers all the time, and are very friendly and helpfull. We ended up going to the turtle farm, Hell and 7 mile beach for $10.00 perperson.

Hi, I agree with the other posters regarding the cement vats. Would have been a complete waste of time had we not taken advantage of a duty free liquor shop close by

Note to Bluefish:

The info on the busses was great. We laughed becase we saw some people being stuffed into a "taxi" mini-van at the tender port for $4 per person. We walked over a block, paid $2.50 per person, got into the same model mini-van with a sign that said bus. There were 5 passengers in the van and we passed the stuffed taxi on our way to the public beach. We think they had 15 people in the taxi! Thanks Bluefish, it was a wonderful day.
