Question about Snorkeling

I'm going on my first Carribean Cruise in March and I'm curious about Snorkeling. I'm not a strong swimmer and am scared to try snorkeling. My husband said it is safe and that I shouldn't have a problem. Do you wear life jackets?? I would love to see the coral and the fish, but don't want to drown with the experience. Pat

Dear Pat,

Step1. Go to the store and buy a mask, fins and snorkel ($50 but you don't have to put your mouth where 100's of others have)

Step 2. Go to the nearest YMCA, Health Club, School (open swim) or motel (with a pool)
and practice. You still have time to do this.

Step 3. If you can snorkel in fresh water, you are more bouyant in salt water so it is easier to stay afloat. Also, you can get a blow-up life preserver from the snorkel boat captain and just blow it up enough to help you keep afloat without making you bob up and down like a cork.

If you follow these steps, you will be able to snorkel with confidence and have a much better time!

Thanks for the reply Sodey. My son and DIL are going to loan us a mask and rebreathable (or something like that) Said we won't get water in our mouth. Good idea about practicing Hadn't thought about that, but I'm gonna try then I won't be so apprehensive about it. Thanks again Pat

Dont forget a dive vest. You can inflate them with just a breath or 2 depending on how much bouyancy you want. They are not that big either. :)

If I did it then anybody can do it. I'm not a good swimmer either. I didn't like using the fins and couldn't figure out how to get them on properly (in the water or out of the water). I don't have a vest but I'm going to buy one before my next cruise. I borrowed one from a cruise mate and only got a little nervous thinking I was just going to float away, but I had so much fun.
