question on rear cabins

Yahoo....this will be our second cruise.. last went in 9/2006 right after the hurricanes that swept thru the Mexican Rivera. Anyway, we're doing the same trip again in August for my wife's big 5-0 and our 25th anniversary. The question is that at this point the only balcony cabins I could get was at the rear. I hear they have a larger balconies, but is there anything I should be aware of? I hear the middle cabins are a little more comfortable for sailing/sleeping purposes (less rocking).

We always book aft cabins and have never had any problems with rocking. We like to be aft because we like the aft pool/bar area the best.

We always try to book an aft balcony if possible. Those pics are worth a thousand words and sums it up rather well. For us, motion has never been a problem in aft cabins and it is usually very quiet since the only reason for passengers to be in that part of the ship is if their cabin is located there.

We're near the back this time. Last year we we close to the front, our first cruise was right in the middle. Hope we like this one! Those are great pics!!!!1

We are on Carnival Valor in September and have a Veranda deck extended balcony at the rear of the vessel. My pcp told me that it is incredible watchng the ports disappear in the distance as you depart so she got us a stateroom that is right in the center (this was a real benefit for booking early). To say we are a little excited is quite an understatement.

That view of the wake is amazing and breathtaking...but there are a couple of negatives that must be considered if booking those rear cabins...rocking and NOISE. It's a personal decision...some love it some do not.:wave

How do you get to book those rear cabins? They are never on the Internet postings that I have found, especially for RCCL. If I would be so lucky as to find one, would it be best to be on a higher rear or a lower rear deck?

The stern (rear) cabins on most of the ships are pretty good, especially on ships like Glory/Valor, where the corner cabins have wrap around balconies. One thing to avoid -- don't get the cabins right under Lido Deck (the hot tubs, pizza and ice cream area, etc.) Two things wrong with this area, including some of the cabins along the side: one, the noise of the scraping chairs on the deck, a petition by guests in the cabins there resulted in a $400 credit to our rooms(!); two, the open deck up above looks down on the stern, which slants outward as part of the ship design, and on the first night someone got sick and splattered our deck with (your imagination here). I would suggest a cabin one or two decks down from Verandah for these ships.

The Pride and Spirit don't have this same problem, but for our 3/30/08 cruise on Pride, I couldn't get the Cat 11 corner suites, they were already booked by smart cruisers who beat me to it. =COOL

We have cabin 7445 (wrap around balcony) on the Conquest leaving March 9th. Can't wait - by the way, if you ever book a balcony cabin of any kind you won't ever go back! ...6 days and counting!

We had a rear cabin on the Miracle and Legend. They were almost back to back cruises and we booked them at the same time. They weren't suites with the wrap around balconies.

What I didn't like was the soot that blew from the stacks. I was fortunate that I only ruined a bathing suit. I sat down on a chair and didn't notice the black soot. It doesn't come out. When you walk outside if you are barefoot your feet also get black from the carbon.

The rear of those ships are sloped. The balcony is extended but the glass rail is on a slope so that area is wasted. There is no roof or overhang. There are always "A" Hole passengers throwing stuff off of the back. Guess where and who it lands on? I have had ice cubes, liquids, cigarette ashes and food hit me or the balcony. Thankfully no one was sea sick. The other problem is there are always passengers hanging over the rail along the upper decks. The rear always attracts more than along the sides. It is not too bad during the day but at night it gets irritating. Especially from the loud talkers.

You hardly get any breeze and it can get real stuffy. Smoke lingers.

When in port you don't see much.

The good is your room is always at the back so it is easier to figure out which way to go to something.

I will not ask for another rear cabin but everyone has different levels of tolerance., or experience.
