Question regarding doors on balconies.

Hi All,
I am booked on the Caribbean Princess, Oct 30, 2004 and we have several people sailing with us. We want to have adjoining balcony cabins, I know there is a door on the area that separates the balconies that the room steward can open, but there may be times when I want privacy and don't want the door open, can we close it or does it have to remain open until the room steward closes it??

Thanks!

Rose :)

Good question. Hope someone can answer it for you! I'm wondering the same thing.

I saw the cabin steward open one when we were on the Grand last time and from what I remember, it seemed to stay open - like it was sticking to the partition or it was locked in place. I would think having it swing freely would be a big problem on a ship. Wish I had paid more attention at the time. :dizzy

Hi Lady Jag,
I was on the Grand last October and had a mini-suite, I used the balcony all the time, but I never paid attention to the door on the balcony divider! I, too, hope that somebody can answer this question for me.

I believe you can close it yourself. However, to re-open it will require the steward to unlock it for you once again.

Since Caribbean Princess isn't out yet and doesn't have a twin that is... I can only go by the ones that are out there. The door doesn't really have a key per-se, but the latch has a square channel where the steward slips in a rod that fits in to open the latch. You can push the door closed, but you can't latch it without sticking the "thing" in there and turning it. Maybe the steward would have an extra that could be left in... but I'd guess not, since it would be a pretty popular request. Maybe you could find something else to stick in there to turn the latch.... or just push the door closed and hope your cruise mates don't open it.

It requires a tool that the cabin stewards have to unlock it. Once unlocked it remains open / unlocked until the cabin steward locks it again. The door can be closed but if there is movement it can sway open again.

Just a note to add to Einsteins post....we have requested the door be unlocked on numerous cruises. It will definitely sway open & closed with wind or movement and BANG but a towel works great. Just roll it up, wrap it around the edge of the door, and wedge it in as you pull it shut. This hold tight even in a storm!
