We are wanting to book a cruise on Fascination to Bahamas and Key West. We are a family of 5. Two of us get motion sickness.

1) Where is the best deck location for a stateroom?

2) What is the best medication or non-medication to use for motion sickness (it's for my son, 12, and myself)?

3) We will get adjusted to the motion after a few hours on board? I just don't want to be sick the whole entire cruise (5 days)?

Thank you so much for your expertise!

The best deck location is always as close the center of the ship as you can get. I prefer interior cabins simply because you pretty much only use them to sleep. I suggestion would be to look at the upper deck, or veranda if you don't mind spending a little more money.
Although I have never had a problem with motion sickness myself, I have many friends that do most of them prefer those Dramamine patches that go behind your ear. Most everyone I know says that they work very well, and they barely notice the motion after a couple of days. I can't give you first hand advice, but I hope my second hand advice will be of service to you! Enjoy and have a good time!

1) The best cabin location to minimize the "motion of the ocean" is low and middle. Find a cabin on the lowest passenger deck near the middle of the ship.

2) I like ginger because it is the only thing that worked on Mythbusters and because it is not a drug. It is also very inexpensive (about $6 for 100 tablets) and will work after you begin to feel sick. I took one before breakfast and one before dinner on a cruise that had several people getting sea sick and I was fine (I get motion sick easily, but have never gotten sea sick on a cruise ship). Make sure you drink some water with each ginger pill (you will only make that mistake once). I also used it once when I started to feel a little queasy and a few minutes later I was fine.

3) It takes more than a few hours to get used to the motion - if the motion is a problem. Like I said, I get motion sick easily and I have never gotten seasick on a cruise ship (lots of times on fishing boats however). The problem is caused by a conflict between the eyes and ears. If you are inside, your eyes don't see the motion. However, your inner ear will feel the motion. The conflict is what causes the problem. This is the reason that the best thing to do is go outside where you can see the horizon. Then you eyes see the motion.

This works in reverse too. I got motion sick sitting on my friend's couch. I was playing a driving game on his big screen TV. So my eyes saw motion and my ears didn't - and I was soon praying to the porcelain god.

If you really need a nausea medication for your 12 year old son, I'd recommend asking your doctor first. I'd hesitate to give anything to a child without a doctor's OK.

As for the Dramamine, beware that it will make you sleepy. It's really hard to enjoy your time on the ship when you're unconscious. If you can get by with the ginger or the sea bands, do so. BTW, lots of people find they don't get nearly as seasick on a big ship, as on smaller boats, I'm one. I've felt just awful while out fishing on the lake, in a 24 footer, but never once in 19 cruises, no matter the size of the waves.

FWIW: Because of my past experience on small boats, I worried about getting seasick prior to our first cruise. So I took a Dramamine on the first day of that first cruise, just as a precaution. That pill, combined with a very early flight that morning, and a late night packing the night before, I was so tired that I lay down in the cabin right after early seating dinner and literally slept straight through the entire first evening and night on the ship. I have no memory of that night, missed the welcome aboard show, never had time to do the first day tours of the spa or the rest of the ship. I woke up in Martinique the next morning and feeling a whole lot like Dorathy, over the rainbow.

I never did take another one of those pills, and never did experience any seasickness, and probably never really needed that Dramamine in the first place.
