Refit for Celebrity Millennium

I was reading that the Celebrity Millennium will be in Vancouver for a refit in May. Does anyone know what they're doing to the ship? We are sailing in June on a southbound Alaska cruise.

I don't think that =X= has actually given a press release on what they are going to do. This is the only real way f finding out what they are planning. I know that info leaks out here and there from "Friends" but seldom is it totally accurate. It is very common for the M class hips on the AK run to spend time here in drydock and they indeed do all sorts of stuff to the ships....but I have yet to hear from anyone at the yard they use letting out info.
I strongly suspect that you will be one of the first to know actually. :) having a cruise planned for June.
The dry dock is actually located in Esquimalt which is a suburb of Victoria over on Vancouver Island.
Let us know what you hear and then let us know what actually took place.

No doubt the Millie is going in for refit. I think that has been known for some while. As the chap says it's refit is of many $$$$ but he won't say what for. They know which side their bread is buttered on. :)

Just found this while I was searching. This was not on a Celebrity website.

Millennium dry dock 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the 3 week drydock scheduled for May 2009, some interesting changes/upgrades will be made to Millennium:

- A second speciality restaurant will be added (!), no information was given about what type of food it will serve
- Cova Cafe will be replaced by Cafe al Bacio (similar to Solstice), serving Italian ice cream in addition to speciality coffees
- The buffet on deck 10 will be completely changed into a "Solstice style" set-up, with various islands as opposed to the current line set-up
- Carpets will be replaced, and the colour schemes will apparantly change too such that carpets "don't look worn so quickly" (whatever that means)
- All staterooms will get flat screen tv's (!)
- Deck 11 will be resurfaced

Holy Hot Cocoa Batman!! ::eek: Very sorry to hear about the loss of Cova Cafe...had a lot of good memories there.
It was well known Millie needed drydock badly...they milked her out for all she was worth!! Very exciting for you to take a nicely refurbed ship. Always a big bonus IMO. So, does that mean the M Class is no more, and they will be "become" Solsitice?=huh....they must have found the particulars on the Solstice line garnered them larger income, either by less staff (the islands) or more nickle and diming with chargable items and venues.

If they are changing to the "Station" method in the buffet I for one am in favour. It worked really well on the Solstice.

I really didn't see much difference in the Cova and Bacio...but I'm neither a chocolate or coffee guy.
If they can get the same TV set up as the Solstice going that would be great for all M class ships.

Hi Bob, why is the TV setup any better? You can still access your on board account 24/7, yes? It's just a flat screen as opposed to a "regular" tv? Since you've been and I haven't, I shall "ask the expert".

How to they "refresh" the stations for hot food and mess? Are there live people there doing it?

Well whadya think of old Phill. He's a local guy up here and his claim to fame was being a TV weatherman for years. Was put out to pasture and now has all this cruise mojo goin' on.

The TV system on the Solstice just was a very new program with all the bells and whistles. Music music music..of all sorts and channels. The account set up actually worked :) plus the tv itself was much bigger. Who knows if they will be able to refurbish the M class.
The stations are quite big, 3...4 sided (I can't recall exactly) and there is a "Live" person in the middle.

Aha. Good to know. I read a lot of negative things on the other board about the "stations" and how the food was "old looking and yucky" (from being self serve - food mixed in with other food, etc.) and no one was there to slice your prime rib, etc. TV sounds pretty cool. Glad to know if I ever take a refurbished M again (Solstice just not my style) - I will be able to get something other than Euro Trance music on the TV....:D

We just got off the Millennium a few days ago in Vancouver and had multiple crew tell us about the refit. This ship is great but really needs this upcoming refresh.

It's my understanding the refit is to change up the design/layout like Solstice - and the "normal" dry docks to "refresh" the ship are being done less often. I believe (correct me if I'm way off here) that instead of every 2 years, it's now closer to 4 years. A lot of wear and tear goes on in 4 years.

Known for its exceptional style and design, Celebrity Cruises is rolling out a series of new design schemes on Celebrity Millennium during a $10-million refresh this year, beginning during its scheduled drydock period this week.

Consistently ranked among the top 10 large ships in the world since its launch in 2000 – and so beloved by cruise enthusiasts that she’s been affectionately dubbed “Millie†in social networking venues – Celebrity Millennium will emerge May 22 from a 12-day drydock in Victoria, B.C., with new carpeting throughout the entire ship, and new upholstery embellishing every stylish stateroom, the Lido deck, the Celebrity Theatre, and the dramatic, sweeping main dining room.

All marble and stone floors and counter areas will be renewed with a gleaming finish, and all wood hand rails on the ship’s verandas and pool deck areas will be newly varnished.

Celebrity Millennium’s sun worshipers are likely to take notice of the work completed in exterior areas, too, as new bolidt – an alternative to traditional teak decking – is being installed across the pool deck, outdoor stage, dance floor and jogging track.

All sounds good exept a TV at the Martini Bar....doesn't work for my "escape" from reality. Must be a guy thing..watch sports I guess

Maybe the finances only warranted cleaning her up.
Actually, I read it wrong. no tv in martini bar - thank goodness. Just new carpets.

I'm really in favor of leaving M Class alone in terms of layout and desiign. I like the more "plush" look, than the 'stark' look of Solstice Class.

Yah I read it over again too. Looks like the TV switch is just for suites and CC rooms. So I doubt they will be changing the system of music at all either. Bah Humbug.
