Thinking of ALaska out of San Francisco on the Regal Princess. Would like some information on this ship from past passengers. How did you like it? How does this ship compare with other Princess ships? I know this is an old ship, are the cabins small?

Thanks

I admit that it has been quite a few years since I last sailed on the Regal Princess (March 2000) but she is definitely a favourite. She is Goldilocks size...not too big, not too small, just right, and is easy to find your way around. Each of the 3 times I sailed on her I found the staff to be exceptional.

The standard cabins are among the largest you will find with more than adequate storage space. Like other standard cabins on Princess ships you will not find a sofa in the sitting area but a desk with chair and another more comfortable chair. Bathroom showers are a good size! If you drop the soap you can bend down and pick it up! :grin

The public rooms are very nicely decorated and give a feeling of elegance.

I am quite sure you would enjoy sailing on the Regal. How could you miss with an elegant ship and Alaska as a back drop?

Marion,
This Regal Princess in NO WAY compares to the modern Princess Fleet unless you compare it to the now gone original Princess ships. It is an 'old style' cruise ship.... very few immenaties.
We were on the 15 day round trip to Hawaii in Feb on the Regal. I WOUND NOT recomend this ship, nor will we sail it again!!!

Disadvantages:
There is no personal choice dinning. You can can go to the buffet or to the pizza resturant instead of traditional dining room.
Spa and gym on deck 4 below water line low ceiling small cramped spaces.
Very bland food soggy veggies
Old style pools no wake area. Pools closed often due to moderate seas.
Smoking on port side of ship... or anywhere the smoke or smokers decided to go!!!

I am no expert on demographics , however, the target age group that Princess reaches is between 55- 85 years old. We are both 41 and 38. Age is not the issue, it is what is offered to do on the ship!!! Bingo, Paint ceramics, or gamble is about it.

Regal is in good condition for its age. the standard cabins are actually larger than newer ships. The staff was outstanding everyone tried to make things better.
If you have another choice to Alaska, I would take it!! Happy cruising!

Sailed on the Regal Princess Sydney to Auckland Jan 2003 and had previously sailed on her sister ship, Crown Princess. I would definitely sail on her again.

No, she does not have the ammenities that the newer ships have, but she does have character. The personal choice dining, etc are things that are easily found out by research.

As for the age group, I think that you will find that with any cruise/ship, the longer and/or more exotic the cruise/itinerary there is a definite tendancy for the clientele to be older, it has nothing to do with the ship itself.

We have not sailed on the Regal or any other Princess ship yet. But we have booked the Regal for July 5th. We've been on the Mega ships, the moderate size, the new, the old and the in between. We have done the research and booked the Regal knowing it is not new and it is not a Mega ship. We are looking forward to not having to fly to the ship. Sailing under the Golden Gate (haven't done that since last October!). And, the great itinerary. The July 5th cruise sails Glacier Bay and appears to be nearly sold-out.
I'll write a review when we get back.
