Does anyone have experience renting cars at these two ports? Is it necessary to reserve in advance? Are the rental car offices near port? Prices? Company suggestions? Advice?

My wife and I would like to drive up to White Pass and sites while in Skagway and tour Mendenhal Glacier and stop by the Alaska Brewing Company while in Juneau.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

for starters in case you missed that.

I can't tell you much about where the rentals are or are not, I do recall reading somewhere that early season is touch and go with rentals being available for some companies

A vehicle in Juneau may just be overkill. There's not too much road actually :) Mendenal easy easy to get to via buses from the docks for a reasonable fee. We used the city bus as a tour and it even goes to within a K or so of the glacier :) (Round trip about an hour.)

We have rented cars many times in Skagway. When driving up to White Pass you really want to keep going and continue about another 10 - 15 miles to Emerald Lake. Emerald Lake is just a few miles past Carcross. It is well worth the extra half hour or so. The lake will be on your left hand side as you driving from Skagway. The only major car rental in Skagway is AVIS and I would highly recommend that you rent from them if you can. The AVIS rental office in Skagway is just a ten minute walk from the ship and there should be a shuttle bus to town from the pier, if you don't want to walk. The AVIS office is located on about the second street as you enter town and you would turn right from the main street. Prices in Skagway would depend on what kind of discount cards you may have but would run around $70 + gas. Reserve your car as early as you can as they do tend to sell out for the cruise season.

You can not drive too far in Juneau but it is a time saver when going from place to place and is a nice option to have. There is at least one major car rental in Juneau but I have not rented a car there for a long time and can't remember much about it. I know it was one of the major car rental companies but am not sure which one.

Please see my other post on this board about other interesting things to see on the way to Emerald Lake from Skagway.

Hope this helps.

Plenty of car rentals in Juneau... all major chains at the airport, but that's a $30+ cab ride from the ship piers each way too... Rent-a-Wreck is the only company in Juneau with a drop-off/pickup service (additional fee) that many people take advantage of. The shuttles from the docks to Mendenhall Glacier DO NOT stop anywhere else, so if you wanted to see the Brewery also, you're looking at $7 per person each way to/from the Glacier, THEN a $20 cab ride each way... For a group of 2, that's $68... for which you should be able to rent a car. Convenience factor is high if you have your own wheels here. (Note, the City Bus stops 3 blocks from the Brewery and 1.1 miles from Mendenhall Glacier visitor center. Runs about every 30 or 45 minutes if the weather is good. That may be an option for you too...)

Happy Alaska Travels!

Home to whales, bears, mountain goats, moose, and a wealth of birdlife - you'll experience it all from the "Spirit of Adventure" as you cruise back in time into Glacier Bay. The vessel's high speed enables us to explore all the way into the Bay's West Arm. Along the way, as you watch for wildlife and birds, you'll notice the transition of plant life from the lush, mature evergreen forest near the Lodge, to younger alder and willow growth, to the recently uncovered bare rock dotted with primitive lichens and mosses at the faces of the retreating glaciers. Watch for giant towers of ice to "calve" away from the face of a glacier and tumble into the water.
