Renting a car in Skagway

Hi,

I'm wondering what scenery you miss out on, if any, if you rent a car rather than take the train to White Pass. There are four of us traveling so it seems more economical and allows us to control our time. If we do drive, any advice, please!

Thanks!

Hi Clirk;

By taking the car you will see a lot of what the train has to offer as the train tracks are on the opposite side of the valley from the road. We went into the Yukon and took the Yukon horseback just past Emerald Lake. Emerald Lake is a must see if you are driving into the Yukon!.

We went to www.yukonhorses.com and they took us into the mountains behind Emerald Lake which was out of this world. We also got to glass for wildlife and saw the mountain sheep and bear. The ranch was layed out like a western town with Yukon anjtiques and gold panning, which we did.

I wish you luck, I know it is hard to know what to do but checking the boards and asking around is the best way to find out. You will save money by going on your own instead of paying the high prices off the cruise ships.

Have fun! Mary

We rented a car and went all the way to Carcross. Wonderful drive. Much better than looking at all the junk in the shops in Skagway. We went in May and had a little snow on the ground over the pass. I think later in the summer this would be gone.

I went on the Avis web-site a few weeks ago and rented a car. However, does anyone have a phone number for the Avis in Skagway? (The web-site gave me a confirmation number but didn't ask for credit card to hold so I just want to make sure there will be a car waiting for us)

Thanks!
