where can I rent a snorkling equipment at st. john and st. martin?
Do I have to sing up for the snorkling excursion or can I just do the snorkling myself?
I want to see some nice tropical fish and reef.
Which island is better for the snorkling , st.john vs st.martin?

St. John is better snorkling. You can take a taxi from St. Thomas to Red Hook and take a ferry to St. John. There are equipment rentals and taxi's there to take you to Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay, etc. I've snorkled all over the world and only paid for an excursion once.

Ferry's run from both Charlotte Amalie & Red Hook. My husband & I were in port on the Carnival Destiny last June (arrived 7 a.m., set sail @ 5 p.m.) and we took a cab to Red Hook specifically to see some of the St. Thomas countryside, because we'd planed to spend our time/day on St. John & at Trunk Bay. Nice drive - and shorter/slightly cheaper ferry from Red Hook. We took the ferry back from Cruz Bay directly to Charlotte Amalie (40 min. vs. 20 - & a couple more $) and enjoyed relaxing a little longer & seeing the coastline of St. Thomas go by in the late day sun. And the view coming into the bay at Charlotte Amalie & of the cruise ships docked is awesome. I'd suggest going one of each way...to get the best of both. Trunk Bay is wonderful...fabulous snorkling. Calm and crystal clear waters...lots of fish! [ haven't been to St. Martin ]
