I am going to be a first time cruiser and hoping to take the southbound Alaska cruise in mid 2009 boarding from Whittier AK. Can somebody please tell me as to what time one should arrive at the cruise liner for boarding assuming the departure time for the cruise is 9 p.m.

Thanks

Ahoy MAK and =welcome to Cruise @ddicts. =sailor

Most of the time you can board the ship beginning around 11:30 - 12:00 regardless of the time the ship sails. In your case if you check in and board the ship early you can get your bags situated and then get back odff the ship to hang out in Whittier if you want to or just enjoy your afternoon and evening on board.

I respectfully disagree Mike. There are may times customs doesn't clear the ship that soon. Your cruise line or agent WILL TELL YOU when to show up. They say "for less of a wait, please do not embark before 2pm)....it varies from port to port.....while I have sucessfully boarded dozens of times at 11am...I wouldn't recommend it for a first time cruiser.

Mbandy - thanks for your response. Actually I was more interested in finding out the latest boarding time assuming the cruise sailing time is 9 p.m. This is because we would be driving in to Anchorage from Denali (5-6 hours), return the rental car in Anchorage, take the shuttle to Whittier (1.5 hours).

I want to determine the starting time from Denali or alternatively move closer to Anchorage overnight (maybe Talkeetna).
Thanks

I would want to be onboard by at least 7pm with a 9pm sailing. All passengers must be onboard by 30 minutes but something i read about a 2 hour embarkation thing-- I dont have a clue sorry- I like being onboard by noon to start my vacation ASAP.
