Rough Seas to Alaska

Leaving July 5 out of San Francisco for 10 day Alaska cruise, first port Victoria.

Just received an email from a cruiser who said their Alaska cruise was the worst they had ever taken. She is a seasoned cruiser and this was their 4th cruise this year. Sailed on Regal Princess and said the seas were very rough and a lot of people were very ill. She even commented that there might have been something else going around the ship besides just the rough seas. Crew was very quiet about it. :help

She said they were very bored and there wasn't much to do on the ship. :yawn

We have three sea days and I would have thought that there would be a lot of planned activities, movies, lectures, etc. Guess I will find out soon enough.

Has anyone sailed to Alaska recently and experienced rough seas? We will also be on the Regal Princess - I am wondering if she doesn't take the seas as well as the newer ships, she is 15 years old now.

Your experience with Alaska seas and ports will be appreciated. :wave

It's fairly common knowledge along the west coast that the stretch of water from LA North is one.... or sure can be one of the worst stretches around. Gong to Alaska from San Fran just means that you are outside more than the usual Vancouver/Seattle runs. We went from Vcr on the 6th June (Infinity) and when crusing "outside" on our return it was very noticeable and the weather was not actually that bad. I don't expect that the Dawn would be any better than the Infinity in sea's...they're both just big floating hotels. In really rough water they are not the greatest.

edit for some bad typing

Just returned from Alaska Friday night (Vancouver) and there were no rough seas in our travel last week...(From Seward south), Unfortunately, the weather changes a great deal there. The week before we picked up the Cruise ship, the trip north from Vancouver was cold, damp and rainy. (A few cruised up one week and back the next) Our week from Seward was sunny and very warm. One evening/night of fog.

I think this is a bit misleading.

going from San Fran to Alaksa is only PARTLY an Alaska cruise. The first half is in open water and has NOTHING to do with Alaska.

how were the seas once you were north of Vancouver?
