I was considering the European Explorer cruise on either Aug. 11 or a Sept. sailing. In seeking out reviews I can't seem to find any comments for the past 2 or so years. Is there a reason for this that I should have been aware of and any opinions as to what would be a better time to sail Aug . or Sept. Would Sept. be a little less crowded on land tours ?

hello and =welcome to Cruise @ddicts..several reasons for the lack of reviews..she is a much older Princess ship...all balconies for rooms, cost of her sailings being a mainly Hawaii/Med sailings is very high, and that the length of her sailings, more than 10 days as a rule.. also deters people with the added cost of flights tacked on to the ports she docks out of,plus most cruisers..especially newer ones want "new" ships with all the latest available goodies,so even though the Royal Princess has a lot of these things she's not considered new.She has Wow factor and we adore =love Princess Cruise Lines but the chances of her being sought out for sailing is lessened .I'd chance a posting on the Community Forum board to get info on her..happy researching..and welome:wave.."nice to meet you"..:)..Joanne

CruiseAholic is currently on the Royal in Europe ..... all reports are that he is having a wonderful time. I will forward this link to him.....maybe he will anwser when he has a minute.

This is his favorite ship ..... his 3rd time on her.....and I bet he squeezes in another before she leaves the fleet.

I have sailed on the Royal eight times she is my favorite ship, mainly for her size an great service. I will not go on the large ships because of the large croweds. She is not for you if you want a land resort with all the none ship activities. There is plenty of things to do but no rock climbing or skating. Also she has interesting cruise sites with longer then normal trips. You need to be a cruise person not a land person who wants to take a boat for a week.

My wife and I were on the Royal two years ago on a transatlantic and had a wonerful time. All rooms are either outside or balcony, and the dining staff was the best we have experienced on Princess. Absolutely wonderful ship if you do not require a theme park at sea. More of a traditional cruise ship, that would be perfect for a european cruise.

Got back last evening from the 5/19 sailing of the Royal Princess. She remains my favorite ship still.

Here are my observations:

1) Found the food to be very good to excellent.

2) The crew were excellent, friendly and very helpful.

3) The Royal is however, as has been said, older and keep that in mind. There are many areas she needs to be updated. She could use a major refurb - bathrooms re-done, etc.

4) Shore excursion staff need to actually visit the places to which they are selling tours. While the descriptions of the tours I took were accurate, they could not answer questions with any accuracy. For example, I asked how far it was from Zebrugge to Bruge and was told it was 90 minutes. It is about 20 minutes.

5) The captain is quite friendly as were all the officers.

6) I did not care for the cruise director J.J. have never sailed with him before and hope I don't ever either. It is pretty bad when the cruise director is the only one laughing at his own jokes.

7) Shows I went to were very good, the dance team was in transition.

8) Comedian / magician were not much better than JJ.

9) Bands on board were very good.

Overall, an excellent cruise.
