Rudee's dilemma

Warning! This is very long...and about a dog...so don't read any further if "not your thing"....

When it rains...it pours...

Well, back a couple months ago, our neighbor (Vet tech) mentioned that she was concerned about Rudee's occasional limping. Could be growing pains?? ....or maybe something else??

He did grow to 90 lbs. at 9 months old

Well, a trip to her vet's office, and several x-rays, bloodwork etc., proved to be a suspicion of fragmented coronoid process....okay...what is that? Well, in this breed of dog, they grow so fast, that a piece of bone breaks off in the elbow. This piece rubs on the cartilage and will eventually lead to bone on bone (extreme pain and cause the dog to be completely lame)

They suggested we got to MSU Vet. Hospital to have an evaluation.

The college is about 2.5 hours from our house, so on appointment day we load Rudee into the van and get on our way.

We are almost there, and all of a sudden the van completely shuts down! DH coasts over to the side of the freeway, and now what? No power what's so ever, and it's about 100 degrees out there!

So we call a nearby dealership and they arrange for a tow. I call a cab company (it is a college town) and ask if they can take me to the Vet. Hospital. No problem...soon they both arrive and DH goes with the van, and I load Rudee into the cab-van. Turns out the cab driver loves dogs! :boogie:

So Rudee and I land in this enormous teaching hospital, and we are led to a room by a student. She examines, and tells us to wait for the doctor. Turns out we get the head of Orthopedic surgery for this exam

She finally comes in and tells me to take the dog out in the hallway. I go down to the end. She tells me to bring him toward her (as she stands with a large group of students). They all watch as Rudee walks toward them. Now the Doctor asks each student to give a diagnosis, and is it moderate or severe....

Well, turns out Rudee does have FCP...bad in the left leg, and moderate in the right....

She tells me he needs surgery ASAP....okay ...and how much will this cost? $3000 for both legs....YIKES!

She tells me that I can discuss with DH and then set the date for the surgery.....

So, I call my cab-driver friend, and he came back to pick me up. He seems just as upset as me, about the diagnosis...then takes me to the dealership to meet up with DH.

Now the van, is just a little over one year old, and I'm thinking this surely will be covered under warranty...NOPE...

We need a new Alternator and the cost will be around $700!!

Now it's about 120 degrees (felt that way anyway) and I'm standing with a very hot German Shepherd in the Service Manager's office....begging for a little re-thinking of this. Nope...he's not budging.

I look at DH and there is SMOKE coming out of his ears! :madd:

I get him outside and we walk the dog around for about an hour. DH keeps saying that he could replace the Alternator himself if he had his tools, parts, etc. But we are far from home and stuck!

So we just sat it out in the waiting area, and finally another two hours later, van is done. The Service Manager came in and said "good news, I got it down to $550" ...oooh, happy day! :hammer:

We did finally get home after a very expensive day, and DH got on the phone with Customer Service, did a lot of complaining...why isn't this covered under warranty? and who ever heard of an Alternator going on a one-year-old vehicle??

After a lot of bit***ing...they agreed to split the cost with us, and will be sending us a check.....

So Rudee is scheduled for surgery on Sept 7th....and we are told that this should take care of his legs, and he should be good as new (after surgery and a six-week crate rest)

Just the way things usually go for us....

You're right, when it rains it pours. As for an alternator on a 1 year old vehicle going bad, I think that should have been totally covered. I would continue to complain up the food chain on that one.

We will keep our fingers crossed for Rudee to make a full recovery. Our old Akita blew out his knee, not once, but twice. After the first time we decided that Vet insurance may cost us $50 or $60 every month, but it is well worth it when the unfortunate happens.

The hard part will be keeping him clam for several weeks afterwards.

You are so right, Mike...I've already discussed this with neighbor. She said "he may need to be on sedatives"...umm, ya think?? (or I may need to be on sedatives)

We are looking into the insurance for future issues, but we were told that this surgery would not be a covered procedure anyway....figures...

Yikes! Poor pup. I have had run ins with service reps and warranty reps about coverage in the past. I am totally simpathetic to your situation. I am surprised that the alternator isn't covered on that new of vehicle. Hope it all works out for you. Give Rudee a scritch for us.

Patty - another dog lover VERY sorry to read about Rudee. I pray the upcoming surgery completely takes care of his problems. Sorry, though, about the expense (I'm all too familiar with Vet bills).

Sorry, too, about the alternator expense. Doesn't your car manual list what is, and is not, covered under warranty? It would appear, just from a general search, that alternators are not covered under a powertrain warranty - but you need to check YOUR manual.

Thanks, Mary Ann...

About that alternator, well an alternator is not something that would go bad after only a year. Unfortunately, lately, these parts are made in China. I won't say any more about that.

They seemed to acknowledge the fact that it should not have gone bad so soon, and I believe they have had many of these complaints.

I believe that is why they agreed to split the bill with us.

Just a note...the last time I had an alternator go bad on a vehicle was on a 12 year old Ford Falcon, when I was 17 years old

Sorry to hear about Rudee's upcoming surgery. seem like it will be harder to keep him down for the it takes to heal. Our furbabies just don't understand why. Hope he heals quickly. Too bad about the car. Call the dealer where you bought it and start complaining more. Good Luck.

Patty - if you paid the alternator bill by credit card, enter a dispute in writing. I fully agree that it should not have gone bad in one year. May I ask what make van was involved?

Make sure you have a big crate for Rudee to camp out in when you are not able to supervise him. Dog's, especially GSD's don't understand taking it easy. For that matter neither did I.

As for the car, an alternator is not a wearable part (like brakes and tires) and should be covered under just about any bumper to bumber warranty. If it is covered and they refuse to pay, do not hesitate to call in the local consumer reporter, the last thing a deal needs these days is bad press. That and find the nicest car on their lot and hide a dead fish under the seat.

So sorry to hear of Rudee's diagnosis, and he will be in my thoughts and prayers for a full and uneventful recovery. I am also sorry to hear of your day. I know very little about cars, so I can't help, but I think you got some great information above. Wishing you the best with that, as well.

Please give Rudee a few scritches from me!

What a horrible situation!! Think trying to keep a 9 mo old pup in a crate for 6 wks will be tough without a little sedation of some kind. Hope all goes well with the surgery.

As for the car, I had a similar situation with a Chrysler mini van about 15 yrs ago. We had bumper to bumper warranty for 36K miles. At 39K miles I drove to my mother's house & when I went to leave it would not start. Had it towed to the dealership & they said we had $1200 worth of repairs which included a water pump & I don't remember what else. Now we always keep up with all the maintenance on our vehicles but this van had problems early on & every time we took it in they could not "duplicate" the problem. I am normally a very easy going lady but when this guy told me about the repairs I blue a gasket & told him to fix the **** car & I would get rid of it & I would never have another Chrysler product. Suddenly he came up with this phone # & said to call & explain the situation so I did & like you, they split it in half. True to my word, within 2 wks of getting it repaired we traded it in & have never had a Chrysler product since. Found out from the dealer that we traded in at that they sold it right away but then had to replace the transmission for the people & they were still having engine problems with it. Good luck with your problem. I don't know why if it is only 1 yr old that it is not covered under the bumper to bumper warranty.

You really had a bad day.

But I have to agree -- that should have been covered for a car that is only 1 year old.

Praying that Rudee's operation will be a success.

So sorry to hear about rudee's medical problems. That is hiway robbery what the vet's charge these days. I will keep Rudee & you in my thoughts & prayers that the surgery goes well & that he heals quickly. Good idea about the seditives.
Car company's are also rip off's I seems nothing that goes wrong is ever covered. I have had great luck with this last Chrysler Town & Country I bought 3 years ago in Sept. So far I havn't had anything go wrong, knock on wood. It's the 5th Town & Country that I have had & believe you me I have had some problems with them, but love them.

Poor Rudee :(
When Guinness had his knee surgery ( mainly black lab) We use an old small dining table and tied a portable dog fence with tie wraps to the legs. It made it larger than a crate in length but not in height so he couldn't jump. He likes to lay under tables so he didn't mind the 'cage' so much. I put 2 layers of memory foam under the table as a bed.
We had it in the living room with us for months
At night I blocked a small closet off in the bedroom area with a dog gate and laid some lattice fence on top so he couldn't jump up, that way he slept in the room with us as usual so he wouldn't get upset.......actually so I wouldn't get upset!
We got the dog fence from Overstock.com.
Even with no head of femurs because of hip dysplasia AND the knee he ran around like a 6 month old pup so we knew we had to really keep an eye on him.
After surgery the pain and pain meds kept him calm for quite awhile but I gave him benadryl between the pain meds if I had to go out.

As for the alternator well I'd be annoyed too! Doesn't seem right for a 1 yr old car. :madd:

Sending scritches and good thoughts Rudee's way! I agree, sedation for all involved might be a good idea. The last time I had vehicle maintenance issues (rear window defroster not being repaired properly) I proceeded to knock on car windows where people were waiting for service and told them to take their vehicles elsewhere if they actually wanted to have their vehicles repaired properly. After about six people left, the chief mechanic came out and promised to fix my car himself if I would stop knocking on windows and telling people to go to other dealerships. It was finally fixed.
