My DH loves Rum. He has experienced a few brands (Goslings, Black Seal, Meyers and Bacardi). Can anyone suggest an exceptional Caribbean Rum? We will be visiting Princess Cay - St. Thomas - St. Maartin - Ocho Rios - Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Any suggestions would be welcomed, thanks - Patricia :)

I consider myself a bit of a rum buff and for my $$ you cannot go wrong with a bottle of Mount Gay Extra OId. Very smooth and great on its own over ice. In Ocho Rios, you might get the opportunity to taste some local stuff that is not exported, be aware of how much you consume, it is potent. There is a factory tour on Grand Cayman, but I can't remember whose it is. Some of the duty free shops in St Thomas and St Maarten will let you sample, so you can get a good idea. I always look for the brands and labels I cannot get here in PA. In St Maarten, go to see the Guavaberry shop, they have a great selection of liquors.

The smoothest over ice is DonQ Limon....you can get it in St Thomas.....it blows the doors off Bacardi Limon...you cannot buy it in the states, I've even tried to order it from a merchant in Miami..they do not export it to the US. It's about $ 8/bottle...well worth it.

There are several Tortuga Rum factories in Grand Cayman where you can sample all the many flavors as well as several of the rum cakes which make great souvenirs for those back home. In case it may be helpful, many of the ship's shore excursions include a trip through one of the rum shops. If not attending an excursion, there is a shop in the shopping area near the pier.

Helpful hint in St. Thomas is if you want to get a good price of rum, shop at the grocery store where the locals buy. We bought alot of rum for like $3 a bottle for gifts etc.

For me, rum from Martinique is the ultimate. (Clement, Trois Rivieres, La Mauny) It's distilled from cane juice, not molasses, and so has a very different taste. Brazillian cachaca is similar. Since the French side of St Martin is part of the same "department" of France as Martinique....maybe they'll have it there? You can bet I'll be looking since I'll probably be back to St Martin before I make it back to Martinique.

Another St Martin specialty is infused rums. "Ma Doudou" is one label. In the tall skinny bottle was dark rum, some bananna slices, cinnamin stick, and vanilla bean. This made an excellent after dinner drink.

Jamaican rums have a very good reputation, although I am less familiar with them.

All in all, for me, the fun of being in the islands is getting stuff you can't get here (including rum from Cuba). Killer bargains on Bacardi, Meyers, etc, are fine, but I go for novelty! That includes at trip to Guavaberry rum shop in Phillipsburg, St Maartin.

I agree with tq_lindo. The RUM in Martinique is delicious, the best I have tasted. I highly recommend the tour of the De Paz Rum Distillery if you ever get there. Maybe the French side -- St Martin -- will have some Rum from Martinique there. Malibu in Barbados is good too -- I like anything Coconut.

Just last night I finally opened one of my bottles from the Guavaberry shop - I had purchased a sampler selection. I tried the Spice Liqueur - mixed it with Coke - very good! It didn't seem very strong, but it put me right to sleep! I think I need to replenish my supply! Time for another trip to St. Maarten!
