Salt water pools on Ships

What is the reason for salt water being used to fill the pools and whirlpools on the ships? Is it weight while in port? You would think they could eventually use fresh water and keep it clean without having to drain and refill each time. It would be a lot nicer to swim in a fresh water pool verses salt water

I rather like the salt water pools. =) It's a different experience. If they treated all the water w/ chlorine and stuff maybe they wouldn't be able to just dump it back in the ocean the way they can salt water.

I do wonder what the reason is, but they don't bother me.

It is mostly economics. It costs a lot of money to distill water on board and it takes several thousand gallons to fill one pool. It is very cheap to simply pump sea water into the pools every day. If fresh water pools are important to you, may I suggest sailing Princess or Holland America. Their pools are filled with fresh water!

Once the pool is filled, it doesn't take much to keep it clean. I wasn't thinking of emptying and filling with fresh water every day or even every cruise. It's just that between the pools, hot tubs, beaches, snorkeling etc... I will certainly get my fill of salt water!

Just a note ...The hot tubs are not salt water tubs they are fresh water, even though the pools are salt water. So you will get a break from salt water.
