Hi!

I hope someone out there can help me. We are thinking of taking a cruise which leaves from San Francisco. How far away is the port where the ship is docked? Also, can you suggest any hotels in the area in case we need to fly out the day before? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Hi Gerry,

We live just 30 minutes from San Francisco.

The cruise ships leave and arrive from Pier 35 which is close to the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco. There are several hotels at Fisherman's Wharf, namely Marriott, Hyatt, Sheraton & Radisson. As this is a tourist area, shops and restaurants abound.

Downtown SF is 1-2 miles (depending on where in downtown you're coming from) from Pier 35. Of course, lots of hotels downtown as well.

We often spend the night in San Francisco since we can get hotels so reasonable on Priceline. We're sailing in April from San Francisco and are staying the night before at the Park Hyatt (about 1 1/2 miles from Pier 35) for just $60 on Priceline. The Park Hyatt is a luxury hotel in the downtown Financial District.

If you're planning on spending some time in San Francisco before or after your cruise, I don't recommend a rental car. Parking is very expensive and the city is actually small enough that cabs and public transportation are the way to go.

When are you sailing?

We, too, are sailing from SFO next month on Mercury. Fisherman's Wharf has the hotels closest to the port, but most anywhere in downtown SFO itself is not much of a taxi ride to the port. We're staying in the Union Square area at the Pan Pacific.

When are you going on the Mercury? We are sailing on April 26th. Can hardly wait. We are also doing a post-cruise and staying at the Mark Hopkins.

With the "how far away is the port?" question, I thought you really might want to know "how far away is the AIRPORT?"

The "port" is right in the City...Getting to it from ANY hotel in the Financial District, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square or Nob Hill area is relatively simple: Take a SHORT taxi ride...

The key for those flying in from out of town is how far is the AIRPORT from the port...and the answer is...about 12 to 15 miles depending on which route you take and how many wrong turns you take...With typical traffic, it will take you a good half an hour...

Do NOT stay down by the Airport...nothing really down there except convenience to the Airport...although there is an abundance of hotels down there at much lower prices than in the City...

If you can find a reasonable rate at one of the major Fisherman's Wharf area hotels, that's a great location...For value, I like the Holiday Inn/Financial District...it's one of the nicest Holiday Inns in that chain and usually you can find some great rates...Make sure you ask about deals and special rates...The Holiday Inn is very convenient to Chinatown and North Beach (the areas you want to go to to EAT) and to the Cable Cars, etc.

Nob Hill (Mark Hopkins, Fairmont) is very pricey...but definitely first class...

Union Square has a lot of smaller, boutique-y hotels...some are very nice, but it's hit-or-miss...

Good luck...

Gerry:
Just sailed out of San Francisco two weeks ago. We flew in the day before, and just for the fun of it, we stayed at The Radisson on Fisherman's Wharf with a room that had a balcony overlooking the bay so we could see everything. It was cool. $200.00+ a night, but for just one night, and for the fun of it, I did it! It is within walking distance of everything! Embarkation from San Francisco is not running very smooth yet. Best to arrive early if you don't want to spend 2-3 hours waiting to board the ship.
Have a great time!

If you might be interested in a botique hotel at the Fisherman's Wharf area check out the Tuscany Inn . Our room had a direct view of Coit Tower and was convenient to (we almost always play tourist and stay at the wharf) everything we wanted to near.

I still say Scoma's is the best restaurant on the wharf.
