Hi Gerry,

We live just 30 minutes from San Francisco.

The cruise ships leave and arrive from Pier 35 which is close to the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco.    There are several hotels at Fisherman's Wharf, namely Marriott, Hyatt, Sheraton & Radisson.   As this is a tourist area, shops and restaurants abound.

Downtown SF is 1-2 miles (depending on where in downtown you're coming from) from Pier 35. Of course, lots of hotels downtown as well.

We often spend the night in San Francisco since we can get hotels so reasonable on Priceline. We're sailing in April from San Francisco and are staying the night before at the Park Hyatt (about 1 1/2 miles from Pier 35) for just $60 on Priceline.   The Park Hyatt is a luxury hotel in the downtown Financial District.

If you're planning on spending some time in San Francisco before or after your cruise, I don't recommend a rental car.   Parking is very expensive and the city is actually small enough that cabs and public transportation are the way to go.
