San Juan question

I will be on the Carnival Victory next week and our first stop is in San Juan. We don't get in until 5 p.m. and I have heard many say that this is pretty much a wasted stop because there isn't time to do much. (Our next 2 stops are St. Maarten and St. Thomas the following two days.)

My question is about beaches and the area of San Juan where the ship will let us off. I will be proposing to my girlfriend on the cruise and am trying to decide how to do it. A friend suggested that I have one of my traveling companions go ahead of us at a beach and plant a bottle containing my proposal "message" in the sand so that she can find it and I can produce the ring as she is reading the message. I thought that this was a good idea but don't know if there will be a beach around to make it happen on San Juan. I think that if everything goes right, I might be able to make this happen at sunset.

So... anyone have any idea if I will be able to make this work? Thanks. I'm excited on so many levels for next week to get here.

my husband and I spent 2 nights prior to our cruise in Old San Juan. The beaches are quite a ways away from the port. The city of Old San Juan is really nice and kind of quaint. We found the walk around the outside wall at sunset to be very romantic. There are large rocks along the walk that act as a break front . The wall goes all around the city and to the point below El Morro. It really is a beautiful place at sunset. The ships will dock about 1 mile walk from the tourist info center and the little park that leads to the city gate and the start of the walk way. No wasted stop here, I have alot of photos if there is anything specifis you would like to see let me know. Good luck
