San Juan

My wife and I are sailing from San Juan on the Dawn Princess on November 30. We are going down to San Juan two days early and staying at the San Juan Marriott. I've been reading a lot of posts that say that walking on the beaches, even a hotel beach, at night is not the best idea. Does anyone know if that is true for the beach at the San Juan Marriott? My wife and I love to walk on the beach right before we turn in for the night, but we obviously don't want to do this if we risk getting mugged. I would appreciate any comments.

Also, does anyone know if I can book a tour of the Bacardi Rum Factory through the hotel? My wife and I really want to do this tour, but don't know how to go about booking it.

Thanks.

Been a few years but the rum tour was very easy. Get off the ship and take the ferry across they bay, .10 cents pp each way, Get a cab at the Ferry stop to the Bacarrdi Factory, about $2.00 pp each way. Factory tour was free. Some of the Hotels have security and it was ok to go out in the secure area but I would not go for a long walk. Even during the day there are some undesireable looking characters away from the secure areas.

Was in San Juan a week ago today and agree with Opus X. Easy to get to the Bacardi Factory and a good time. People are friendly BUT, I would agree it's unwise to go beach walking at night and yes, be aware even during the day. I' m sure the Marriott will have a wonderful pool so why not just stay with that - you'll most likely be cruising to some places with good beaches - it's not worth the stress and worry for a short walk on the beach.

A romantic walk on the Promenade Deck would work for me!

Have a wonderful cruise!

We really enjoyed the Bacardi Tour in Jan 02 however the ferry ride at that time was $.50 / per person each way. Right beside where we docked so easy to get to. The cab was the $2. pp previously mentioned. Much better doing it this way than thru the ship.

Dear Chuck,
Was in San Juan for 2 weeks in July'03 for the World Masters Athletics. Stayed in the same area -about three blocks from the Marriott- beaches in the area were lovely ( but beware the rocks just under the water) and it was always windy. The Condado is the "gay " area of San Juan and gay bars abound. Unfortunately one of our athletes was mugged only two streets away from the Marriott on his first night out so walking at night is probably not a good idea. The help that the staff of the Marriott offered was outstanding.
The old town is wonderful to visit especially some of the local Salsa bars - but beware of the "bathrooms"! and there were very few cabs on the street late at night so always call from the bar before you leave.
There were athletes who used both the organised and the DIY trips to the Bacardi factory with similar reports so it really will depend on wether you are happy to be independant.
Hope you have a wonderful time.

We stayed at the Marriott last December. Nice hotel with plenty of activity. It has a very friendly staff. We did not walk on the beach but it was lovely. Don't really know how safe it is at night. Our room overlooked the pool out to the ocean. What a view! Hope you enjoy the trip.
