First thing I do is go to the ship and have lunch, then I go into Old San Juan.
I walk along the cobble stone streets by the waters edge, visit a few shops, look at a few vender stands, smell the flowers, look at the fountains and the scultpures, stop and have a drink at the El Convento, go into the old Church across the street and say a prayer to say thanks for being here, go around the block to a beautiful plaza that has a foutain and statues, look at the small children playing and chasing the pigeons and then I buy some soda to take back to the ship.
You could walk to El Morro, go to the rum factory or gamble at the Sheraton but what I do is enough for me and helps set my mind for the cruise to be.

Good suggestions. Actually this includes many of the things I did at our stop there this past week. We arrived very early in the am before the stores opened. We walked the streets and visited the pigeon park. We headed up to see the San Juan Cathedral (St. John the Baptist). If you like seeing old statues and relics this is a nice stop. We walked over to El Morro which is part of the National Park system so if you have one of those park passports bring it with you for a stamp. It was super hot that day and we only had a short visit and left around 12:30pm. You can do the same tour on foot as the one you pay for on the cruiseline. It's about 3/4 a mile between El Morro and the ship docks. I recommend contacting the Bureau of Tourism for Puerto Rico for a great book which has a excellent map inside it. They mail it to you for free.

I have taken the Rainforest tour through the cruiseline before. It's not a bad thing to do if you have a late flight out on disembarkment.
