We will be taking a Southern Caribbean cruise from San Juan.
I plan to board, get lunch then get off and walk around, then get back on before it leaves at 10pm.
Are you allowed to get off after embarking the ship?

Not sure exactly how it works from port to port or cruise line to cruise line, especially in light of recent security issues...But, I do know that when we sailed the Millie out of Venice last year, not only could you board and then leave the ship all day in Venice, Celebrity actually somewhat encouraged it, providing a continuous shuttle to Piazza San Marco...Of course, this may vary line to line and port to port...I'm sure they don't want any interference with the normal boarding process and with security...

It will be interesting to hear from folks who have sailed out of San Juan recently...
FWIW, we don't plan on getting off the ship in San Juan once we've boarded...we're flying in a day early and plan on wandering Old San Juan, eating local, etc. the night before...Once we get on the ship, we're going to relax and get ready for Casa de Campo...

Which ship/sailing are you on?

We will also be flying in the day before, but we don't arrive until 7pm. By the time we get to the hotel, have dinner, etc it will late. So, I plan for us to spend the next day exploring Old San Juan.
It will be RCCL Adventure of the Seas 10/05.

We cruised out of San Juan on Galaxy in April 01, and Adventure back in April 03. On Galaxy they certainly allowed you to exit and reenter the ship after you checked in. For Adventure, our plane was delayed a few hours, so we only made it to the ship about 2 hrs. before we sailed, so we didn't try to leave. The security at the port of San Juan was pretty tight, so that may have changed.

We boarded and left the ship last January. It was a nice way to spend the first day of vacation....sort of a bonus port day! :) Enjoy!

You can get off after checking in. It is ok to go and do ship's business (drop stuff in cabin, eat, etc.) then get off the ship and wander until departure.

Thank you all for your messages.
Any recommendations for a relatively cheap hotel, yet nice and clean hotel in San Juan?

If you're willing to stay in Isla Verde, there is a Hampton Inn that is walking distance to the Ritz-Carlton, the El San Juan, and the Intercontinental. It's across the street from the beach, but is certainly very walkable. It is probably half the price of the mega resorts right on the beach. It is less than a 5 minute cab ride from the airport, but is about 30-40 minutes from the pier depending on traffic.
