Any recommendations on quality tours through Saxman Village? There are so many, but how to differentiate price and product? What is the right amount of time to allow to spend there? What about going on your own...can you take a cab, pay at the gate, and still get a good comprehensive tour?

Thanks for any help.

hi

i have been checking into the village tour also. i found a couple sites ( im sure there are more than i have looked at ) and i have some good ones to pick from.

www.northerntoursofalaska.com

www.citytours.alaskamade.com

i have also found out that the only way to see the native dancers in the clan house is too book through the ship. the tour starts on a bus or van and takes you too the village outside of ketchikan. the tour last between 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. i started my search by putting in ketchikan tours on the net it brought up alot of links. this tour averages around 30 35 dollars. more im sure from the ship. good luck and i hope this helps.

and have wonderful time.

Dusty,

I was referred to http://www.alaskarainbird.com/ by the owner of Southeast Aviation when I made flightseeing reservations. I have not had time to make contact to find out exact details of their Saxman tour. He also gave me the phone number: 907-225-8810...Owner's name is Annie.

Rainbird Deluxe Tours is an excellent choice. However, like all the independent tour companies - they are not allowed to take visitors into the clan house for viewing the
Cape Fox Dancers nor are they allowed to view the video that gives an historic perspective of Alaskan Natives. You also (at certain times when the ship's tours are in the Carving Shed) you'll have to view it through windows from the outside. That's not bad - you get a much better view of the carvers and the articles being carved by being above the work space and getting a bird's eye view.

Rainbird's coaches are the most comfortable of all the tours sold on the dock. The price is about $30 - and you see more of Ketchikan than with similar tours.

The only tours sold where you can view the Video and Dancers at Saxman is the tour sold aboard the ship. It is more expensive because you do experience more entertainment at Saxman.

the rainbow tour looks great and i really want to do this tour next time. i spent the last port day there doing the floatplane with michelle ( which was awesome ), seeing creek street and shopping. so this time will be a different kind of day. of course i will still get in the shopping..

Used Rainbird last year in Ketchican. Excellent. Reminder, if you book ahead they charge your cc and you have to pick up tickets at the tourist office. They also have a little hut they set up on the dock and you can just book & pay xcash there.

i received their tour brochure in the mail last week and it sounds really good. the saxman and totem bright package is a great bargain from all the research i have done for these two tours. i think they are the ones we are going to use. we might even be able to get in the lumberjack show if it fits into our time frame. cant wait to go.
