We are booked on Mariner of the Seas for Jan 11-18 04' and want to do the scuba in Jamaica and Cozumel. I felt the ship's prices weren't unreasonable ($80 pp/ two dive sites at each location) Is there any reason I should look into going with a local company off the internet or should I stick with the ship's choice ? Has anyone done scuba diving in Jamaica and is it worth it ? I have already dove in Cozumel and it is at the top of my list so far. Any info on diving in jamaica would be helpful (include website addresses, prices, etc. if you know them) Thanks so much ! I can't wait....

Jamaica won't at all compare with Coz. If you absolutely feel the need to get more of a nitrogen fix, it's better than staying dry, but the two aren't at all in the same category. Jamaica is merely okay, Coz is terrific.

As for going independent in Coz, unless your port times are unusual (getting in late or leaving early), then I'd say definitely go with an outside vendor. There are too many excellent choices where you can do exactly the diving you want rather than be limited to the ship's excursions. The prices may or may not be a savings, but you'll likely be on a boat with fewer people, and be able to specify what you want to do.

I dive with Dive Paradise in Coz - they're the largest, and thus can be quite flexible with cruise ship passengers. Eagle Ray Divers have built their business catering to cruise ship passengers and are highly recommended. Papa Hogs also seems to accommodate cruise ship divers more easily than other shops.

I have heard good things about Eagle Ray Divers and have been in contact with them. I am going to use them in Feb for a small group trip for snorkelers and divers combined.
