We are on the Carb aug 1 and are taking our two sons 19/15 and want them to scuba at grand cayman. I need ideas as to what is better to use the princess resort scuba course or to book a outside company on the island. My fear is that with an outside company that if we can not stop at the island (weather) or what ever then we have lost what ever deposit we have with that company. Has any one encountered the same dilema? AND BY THE WAY I CAN'T WAIT

Unless both of your boys are certified divers, you won't be able to book a scuba trip thru any of the island dive shops. When my daughter was about 15 my husband and she did a Discover Scuba trip thru Princess and had a great time. They only dove to about 40 feet, but they got to see lots of fish and coral.

As to booking/paying if you miss the port. Any reputable company will refund any deposit you have made if your trip is cancelled. We've worked with Capt. Marvin for the swim with the sting rays trips about 3 different times now, and they don't even require a deposit, you just pay when you get there. They are very understanding if the ships aren't able to make the port. Luckily (fingers crossed) that has never happened to us!

Good luck and enjoy your cruise!

I used Princess for a refresher course (I am Open Water Certified) and was very happy with the levelof attention and professionalism of my instructor. If they want to dive at more than one island, or you think they will want to dive again, invest in a full certification course. I suggest you do it locally rather than on the ship so they don't lose time on the cruise. Discover Scuba and Resort courses are generally only good for that day, by that I mean other operators will not accept that as certification.

Diving is not a risk free v enture. You are underwater, sometimes as deep as 100 feet or more (not in a Discover or Resort Dive) and wearing upwards of 20 pounds of additional weight. It pays to have the proper training and practice. Spending a few hundred dollars on getting proper training and certification can lead to a lifetime of discovery. (I sound like a commercial).

There are two places that I know of that offer resort course/discover diving both are in Grand Cayman and the companies guarentee a refund of the deposit if your ship doesn't come in because of weather:

Abanks at Eden Rock Discover Diving the price is really good, only $75 and they take only a few people at a time and the dive site is beautiful. I believe if you are a diver you can dive along with your children during the course.

Double Resort Course with Stingray city dive Here is another company that will do a resort course with two dives, one a shallow wreck dive and then a stingray city dive. $150 for everything.

In a way Tina Lee is not quite correct. It is true that in order to do a scuba dive trip, you need to be certified, but you do NOT need a certification to do a Discover Scuba trip, also known as a Resort Course.

I would recommend arranging your own discover scuba experience.

<A href=http://www.neptunesdivers.com/instruction.html> Neptunes Divers </a> offers the resort course in the afternoon.

Like others have said. A good company will refund your deposit if the ships can't anchor at Grand Cayman.
