Sea shells

We are going on a cruise to Montego Bay, Jamaica, Grand Caymans, and to Cozumel. I was wondering if anyone knows any good beaches to look for shells at any of these ports.

Grand Cayman and Jamaica are both surrounded by large reefs so there is very little wave action the locals row boats about 1/2 mile out, so there will not be a lot of shells there. I am not sure about Coz I have never paid attention but I don't remember seeing many if any.But walking on the beach is the real treasure! Happy Cruises

=yeah The shelling is better in Florida or the outer banks of N.C.

I collect sand. I scoop a little of it up and put it in a plastic 35mm film container (2 for each beach). When I get home I put it on a cookie sheet and bake it on low heat to dry it out. Then I pour it in to a plain glass salt or pepper shaker which can be purchased really cheaply at the dollar store. I seal the top with some plastic wrap and trim the edges around the screw on top so the sand won't pour out. Then I label the shaker with the island i got the sand from.

It is interesting to see all the sand next to each other. The sand from Cozumel is a little finer than the sand from Grand Cayman. Sand from Costa Maya is about the same as Grand Cayman but has some flecks of pink in it. Sand from St. Thomas is much finer and a little more brown than the whiter sand from the Western Caribbean.

Take pictures and leave footprints :)

I will admit it raised some eyebrows with a TSA security officer when I had the containers in my carry on bag on the way home from a cruise. I had to convince him it was only sand. It goes in my checked bags now :lol

I would be careful about collecting shells or sand. The Islanders don't appreciate foreigners robbing their beaches so to discourage this they cast a very powerful spell or hex on anyone that does. Depending on the island it can even be a double whammy.

Don't mess with the Voodoo.

I collected tons of sea shells from St.Kitts a few weeks ago. I didn't have anybody look at me funny. No voodoo spells have been cast that I know of lol
