Sea sick? Anyone? I'm worried...

In 4 days I am boarding the Carnival Inspiration in Tampa. We are headed to Belize, Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Costa Maya. I am so worried about getting sick on the ship. I cannot handle the up and down rocky motion. I have gotten some Dramamine just in case but am being told by friends that it won't be needed and the ships are sturdy...How true is this? Is my stomach going to get queasy? Have you all ever seen anyone get sick on board?

Thanks

Our first cruise (many moons ago) was in mid October, we left port 3 days behind a hurricane. This was on the Sovereign of the Seas, a much older and smaller ship. I felt a little ill the first night , but I still blame the greasy duck I had for dinner and the green cuban cigar I had later. Put Seabands on my wrist and went to bed. Took them off the next day and have never had a problem. My brother and a few of his friends got sick during the trip and we did have significant wave motion. When he remembered his Dramamine, he was fine. The next cruise, he took ginger root and again had no problems until we went out on a 40ft dive boat in 6 foot swells. Again, I think it was more the fact that he ate a heavy greasy breakfast and then was rushing about to get off the ship.

Take Dramamine or ginger root, watch the foods you eat. Avoid greasy or real heavy dishes. You should be fine. The gulf is pretty calm during the late winter and early spring. Wave heights in the gulf right now are between 2 and 5 feet. You won't even notice them.

Relax and forget about it.

people have posted that bonine or meclazine - over the counter drugs- have less side effects then dramamine -- we have used both and have never had a problem with them
and they work equally well -- we take a tab every day starting with the day we fly out

Be sure to take the Bonine or whatever med you are taking -- starting the day BEFORE you set sail. It is harder to get better if you start the medication after you become ill. Relax and have a good time!

Ive been on that same itinerary twice. I live in Tampa, how convenient! Your entire cruise is within the gulf/riviera, very calm this time of year. If not for the sound and slight vibrations from the motors, you would think you were standing on terra firma. I wouldn't worry too much.

On my last cruise the ocean was very choppy and half the ship was seasick! It was the first formal night dinner and the dining room was half empty. I had just ordered my dinner and so looking forward to it, when it hit me!! I barely made it to my cabin... What an awful feeling. I took bonine, but only after I got to my cabin. I found out through these boards that you HAVE to start it the day before you cruise to get it into your system, which I will definately do on my next cruise. I don't want to go through that again! ugh.

I actually love the slight rocking of the ship and sleep much better on it. I did however get seasick recently, taking a smaller boat from Cozumel to Playa de Carmen. It was a very rocky 40 minute ride. I felt much better once my breakfast went overboad. Once there, the tourguide stopped at a store for us to buy dramamine for the ride back. Well I took it for the ride back, and was soooo sleepy for the rest of the evening, I was walking around like a zombie. I went with my son to the library to play games, and I told him I need to lay down for a minute, right there in the library. I just could not stay awake. I think I fell asleep for a little bit. Thank god my son was still there when I woke up.

I am a super seasick person. I had the prescription patch - Transderm Scop. Wonderful. The only time I got to feeling a little off was one night we were just 90 miles outside of hurricane Fabian and he was sending us 20 to 30 foot swells. I took a bonine that night and was fine.

I didn't feel the ship move except for that night I mentioned. We had a window table at dinner and the first night on the ship I was pretty aware of the movement, but it just made my head feel a little funny whereas I would have normally been super sick to my stomach.

Good luck to you and have a great trip!

Well, speaking from the queen of seasickness and carsickness...all 3 of our cruises I didn't need anything for it! They have stabalizers on the large ships now and you don't feel it. But I do remember in Feb 99 when the Sensation went from Tampa to New Orleans to Cozumel that we came back thru the Gulf during a noreaster and the waves were HUGE and the ship rocked. That day I did need dramamine. You can pick up free dramamine from the pursers desk so don't worry about it.
