Sea sickness

Hi, this is going to be our first cruise were going on the independence of the seas in July. I've always suffered sea sickness on past smaller boats and am concerned this is going to happen again! I've been told this doesn't happen on the larger ships. Does anyone know if they do the sea sickness injection on this ship or do the tablets work.

Many thanks Trish

Yes, they do the injections at over $100 per. Bonine works for some......so do the wrist bands.

Hi Trish,

It really depends on WHERE you're sailing. You don't mention the intineary, but the Carribean is extremely calm - the Independance is a huge ship and even in rough seas wouldn't be an issue unless you are extremely sensitve to motion. If that's the case, take your Dramamine BEFORE boarding (its useless once you get sick) and do NOT visit the on board ship's doctor. They are ridiculously expensive and frankly, poor medical care in general. See your regular doctor for a script if you are hypersensitve to motion.

But having been on many sailings during rough seas, I only got sick once and that was a very small ship in 30 foot swells.

If you get sicksea while deep sea fishing (as I do) - DO NOT WORRY ABOUT A CRUISESHIP....whole different animal. You'll barely feel a thing.

Hi all, many thanks for your replies.

I do believe it is more motion sickness to sea sickness, though not certain.

We are going on a med cruise from Southampton in July, but really do appreciate your comments - I will see my GP.

Thanks again,

Trish

Hi Trish,

One of the best natural remidies for seasickness is ginger. You can find candied ginger in some stores and ginger tablets in any health food store. As posted before it is a huge ship and the motion is much different than a smaller boat. You should be fine.

My husband get motion sickness, but he does fine on the ships. Even the small excursion boats. He uses Bonine and claims it doesn't make you as sleepy as Dramamine will. He takes one every morning on the ship, and sometimes another in the afternoon if we are going on a smaller boat. I even take them once in a while, seems to help if you wake up a little under the weather after taking in too much of the local rum :)

Hi,

I will not sail without the transderm patches (placed behind your ear). I have been on 2 cruises. The first one, I brought gravol with ginger - didn't last and all I wanted to do was sleep. I thought I was going to have to leave the ship and take a plane home it was so bad. My husband took me down to the infirmary the second night but the doctor was gone. We went back up to the room and I went to sleep. The next day we were at port so I thought well it should get better. When the ship went to leave again that night, we were in the dining room, and my head just automatically went on my husband shoulder. The woman across from me asked me "Dear are you sea sick?"; I said yes. She reached into her purse and handed me 2 transderm patches. She saved my life. They were the best things ever invented. There were no side effects, except I got dry mouth in the middle of the night, so I kept a water by the bed. That was it. I woke up the next day a new person. Needless to say the following year on the 2nd cruise, I brought the patches with me. I was funny though. I tried not to take them as long as possible. I thought, well maybe it was the first cruise and maybe I won't be sick on this one. WRONG!! I put that patch on as soon as I started to feel yucky and had the time of my life. Next time, it's going on before the ship leaves so I do not waste anytime time. Just my opinion.

Good Luck, and have a fantastic cruise.

Ginger capsules. Never travel without 'em. Not for me, thankfully, but it's nice to be able to help others....

Hi Trish,

I bought the Transderm Patches over the counter at a drug store in Ontario Canada, where I'm from. I hope this helps!! Sorry I didn't write sooner.
