sea sickness

Concerned about sea sickness (have NEVER cruised before). I have heard horror stories and I don't want my cruise vacation ruined. Here is what I have heard: take ginger capsules (sold at health food stores) and wear the new acupuncture wristbands they have out now. I was told NOT to take the other meds like Dramamine, etc. if you like to drink and my husband and I DO like to drink a lot so what does everyone suggest. I mean, then there are some who say they never got sick!! I want to be prepared either way and have already bought the 3 items mentioned just to be on the safe side. I am sure this cost of this stuff on the boat is outragious.

I usually take one non-drowsy dramamine after breakfast BEFORE getting on the ship. That way it is in your system when you board. Haven't had a problem with drinking while doing this. Some people take one per day, I only need one the first day unless it's really rough. The way to combat seasickness is to take care of the problem before it starts. Once you're sick it's hard to get over it except with time. Also, remember to eat regularly (even if it's only crackers) and go on deck in the fresh air where you can focus on the horizon not the movement of the ship.

Hi, I like Bonine better. Dramamine makes me drowsy and you really should not drink alcohol with any drug that makes one drowsy. We always fly in a day early so I take one chewable tablet right before I fly, then one in the a.m. on Sailing Day and one more in the a.m. on first full day of the cruise and usually that's all I need. OK to DRINK with this one, too. Remember, this is a floating hotel, not usually a problem for most people, especially if you are careful not to cruise in hurricane season. Also, the Caribbean is good for smoother sailing. Bon Voyage :) :) :) !

we always use the Walmart brand Equate motion sickness pills. Start it the day before you leave, then take them only in the morning after that. We have usually found out we don't need them after 2 days, though last time on the 5th day we had some movement and started feeling bad and my husband and I both took some more. I swear by these pills - they got us through our first cruise which went right through Hurrican Erin about 6 years ago, I think the key is to start them the day before. Yes, I do drink with these and we have been on 4 cruises.

As Paula said be sure to eat and stay busy!

Do not sit around or lay down if you start feeling a little light-headed.

Walk around the ship, see the sites and talk to people.
On our first night on our first cruise we all started feeling a little sick and the cabin steward gave us the above hints and it worked!

No pills, no bracelets, nothing.

Just don't focus on feeling sick and all will be well.

If you don't want your cruise to be ruined, don't focus on the horror stories. Unless you are prone to motion sickness you'll be fine without anything. The large modern ships are suitably stabilized. Be prepared as you are but don't talk yourself into getting sick. The mind is very powerful.

My wife is quite prone to motion sickness. She uses the Scopalomine Patch, which is prescribed by her doctor. She also uses a ginger candy called Ginger Chews, which are made by "The Ginger People". You can buy them in health food stores and they can also be purchased online. She has made it through 2 week-long cruises without getting sick, although she has felt some nausea. Also, if you are feeling woozy, take advantage of the beef broth from room service. Ginger ale helps, too. Good luck!

We are cruising the Conquest on 4/6/2003, and can't wait to go.

My family takes Meclizine HCI tablets for motion sickness and have never had a problem. It does not require a prescription but you might have to ask your pharmacist for it as I couldn't find it on the shelf. We took it early A.M. before we left for the airport morning of cruise and one that night and never took it again until end of the week when we could feel some movement of the ship.WARNING: May cause drowsiness and alcohol increases the drowsiness effect.

I'm the worst about car sickness- so I was really worried about sea sickness. I took the acupunture wristbands. When I first got on the ship and into my room (which was in the front of the boat) I could feel the ship moving and I thought I was going to be in big trouble. But, I just went to the Lido deck (middle of the boat) and got a drink and I was fine. I never did use the wristbands - and after a few hours, I got used to the boat moving while in my room. Just think about something else and stay intoxicated - you'll be fine :)

Happy Sailing!!
