The times I have been on Carnival all our tablemates were fairly close in age. I don't know if that is how they pick them but that seemed to be the case.
There are 13 years between me and my husbands ages. We have always been seated with people either close to his age or mine or a mixture of both. Never had any kids or teenages at our table nor have we had elderly folks. So I'm guessing they match ages.
