Hello all............my first trip to S.Caribbean will be the end of this month. Needing some help on choosing my excursions - We (group of four in our mid 30's) love adventure and sun. Also would not mind renting a car a time or two and touring the islands ourselves. These are the islands we will be visiting:

Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, St. Maarten.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions! - Stephanie :)-D

We would love to scuba dive somewhere, but unsure where to do so. We are already certified!

Hi all!

We will be taking a Royal Caribbean cruise to the Soth Caribbean at the end of March. St. Thomas. St. Maarten, Antigua, St. lucia, Barbados. I am overwhelmed by the variety of shore excursions offered. Can anyone offer any guidance? Would like to hear about good experiences and bad! Any info at all would be helpful in sorting through the many options. Thanks

The Good: We went on our own, caught a cab with several people (we did not know) from our ship to Red Hook on St. Thomas. From there we went by ferry to St. John, and another cab to Trunk Bay. St. John is largely national forest, less than 10% developed, and looks like the Caribbean was meant to--no venders! You will not save money doing this, A ship's tour to Trunk will cost about the same as the cab/ferry/cab combo, but you will have control over when you leave. After everyone was herded back to the ships we stayed at least another 1-1/2 hours before we headed out, with plenty of time to spare before sailing time (my daughter and I shopped for a couple hours on St. Thomas--we could have stayed at the beach longer yet but wanted to be sure to make it back). Trunk bay is so gorgeous! You can rent snorkel equipment there and snorkel a marked trail right from shore, or move over 50 feet and be on white sand as far out as you care to walk. There is a small admission 2-4 dollars if I remember, to enter the park. There is a decent concession there, and clean washrooms. The people were courteous and spoke English (you are in on a US Virgin Island). If you don't like Trunk grab another cab and go up the shore to Cinnamon Bay. St. Thomas is the shopping capitol of the world apparently, and I will shop at the Mall thank you. I came to see and do, not carry home! Friends took a sailboat on a private charter to a few snorkeling spots around St. Thomas and neighboring islands, and liked this even better than Trunk--small craft got in some really fun secluded places. You are in port a long time and can arrange things like this with minimal worry if you allow plenty of time to get back to the ship.

Also good: We went to Orient Beach on St. Marten. Very little nudity (we had two teenaged girls with) and mostly restricted to one end of the beach, but naked people did feel free to go for strolls and you WILL see them. The surf was high that day and my girls were too busy body surfing and jumping in the waves to worry. Also did this on our own: many many cabs outside cruise terminal on St. Marten. Driver agreed to return for our whole cabload (we 10 strangers pretty much agreed on a time we all could live with). He came back right where he said he would be, but beach is lousy with bars/restaurants. If by some freak of nature you can't see a cab and yours doesn't come back you will be able to call one with no problem. No one naked on Orient should have been, in my estimation--do some Pilates!

The bad: We tried to go horseback riding on St. Marten at Lucky Stables. We arranged weeks in advance via internet (checked references they gave us and also on chat sites) They were so far behind we could not possibly do the ride and make the ship. Very disappointed daughter, as well as cab fare ($20 one way) down the drain. Other family that shared our cab had waited on the "beach"--not anywhere you really want to hang out, rocky and not cool) for two hours for their turn and couldn't do it with the delay either. We would have stayed at Orient 2 hours longer. After wasting all the time and money we had to buy our pop and pringles from them while we waited for our cab.

The good: We have done many many trips on our own and always had a superior experience to the ship's over crowded offerings (I am not a big fan of being herded anywhere in a huge group) and Lucky Stables was our only strike out.

St. Maarten is beautiful. The color of the water is amazing! Go to the French side and do parasailing. The view is incredible! Also, St. Maarten is a good place to shop. Electronics, you can find things for much cheaper than you'd pay here in the States. Alcohol, well we came back with three litres of rum (pineapple, coconut, and mango) for $21.

In St. Thomas, they have a Gondolla Skyride. You pay somewhere around $16 a person and you ride up a mountain in St. Thomas. You can purchase tickets from Royal but there is no set time of going, you go when you have time. Overall it takes about an hour. There is a restaurant and some shops at the top of the mountain.

Its VERY much worth the money, the view is amazing. Here are a couple pics I took from the top.

In Antigua, there is a great excursion that was organised by the Cruise Line which is the Catamaran Cruise Round the Island, it is a 6 hour cruise, but includes a 2 hour stay at a private beach, only reachable by sea, here you can sunbathe, swim or you can snorkel out to a beautiful reef. (One of the crew acts as your guide).

The crew then cook a buffet barbecue off the back of the boat, and there is all the rum punch, beer, wine or soft drinks all you can drink. Everbody we had with us had a great time, the crew set out to make sure we enjoyed ourselves, they were all very professional and knowledgeable. The cruise cost $79 per person and was extremely good value.

I have heard that St.Thomas offers the best shopping of any port on this cruise. Is there adequate time to go to St. John for snorkeling, and still fit some shopping into the day? I am very interested in making sure that the kids get that snorkeling experience at some point on the cruise, but would hate to sacrifice a quality shopping opportunity.....

We were able to do both, including staying longer at St. John than any of the ship's tours were allowed to. We were, however, off the ship first thing in the morning. i do not waste time in port sleeping in!

I was never on this cruise but my husband and I went to St. Johns & St. Thomas for our anniversary. We visited St. Thomas but it's all shopping, we loved St. Johns. We hiked on the trails the woods and went snorkeling. Yes, you must go to Trunk Bay (beautiful) and Watermelon Bay. Also, we loved trying the local food and just wandered around. We felt safe and the food was very good, great experience. St. Johns has some good restaurants - but if I was cruising I would probably save the money and eat on the ship. Also, we took a taxi tour, our guide was wonderful. You would be so surprised to find out some of the unique plant life on Sr. Johns. (dangerous tree to touch, plant that shuts when you run your hand over it, and a plant that you can get a starter plant by picking one of the leaves and hanging it on a string - roots will grow and then you can plant it). We stayed a whole week on St. Johns and had lots to do.

There are lots of things you can plan on your on. We did a tour in St Thomas with Godfrey Tours. He picked us up at the ship. We did some shopping in town first with a designated amount of time & where he would pick us up.He then took us on a tour of the island which was awesome. It ended with a beach trip We went to Coki beach but could have gone to Sapphire. We rented jetskis for a while & enjoyed some swimming. You could snorkle here also & there were bathrooms / changing rooms. Great tour I would use him again in a heartbeat.
St. Lucia we did a catamaran tour through the ship & had a great time. Went over to the Pitons did a tour, We were able to go swimming at a nice beach for a while. Saw a volcano, had a great lunch onboard the craft. A great day was had by all.
Antigua we got a taxi at the port & got a tour of the island went to a beach for some fun in the sun. The driver waited for us & took us back to the ship when we were ready.
St. Marteen has a nice beach right near the pier where you can rent water craft & enjoy a beach day. There are restaurants & shops close by if that is what you want to do also. Very easy to catch a cab to go to St. Martin also. We have done both.
Barbados - we took a cab & went to the Boatyard for the day. A nice beach with lots of water toys to play with - banana boat rides, parasailing, jetskis,etc... They have a bar & gift shop. A nice beach to relax at & just swim if you like & just a short cab ride from the ship.
Hope this gives you some more ideas.

If you want a cheaper way to go to St. John, you can take the local bus from near the ship to Red Hook. The $2 pp vs. $10 pp. can add up. PM me if you details on how to do this. As the previous posters said, St. John is gorgeous! We have snorkeled at both Cinnamon and Trunk Bays, and we like Cinnamon better. You would have time afterwards to do some shopping at the pier and to take the tram up to the lookout.

Barbados - we have taken the Silver Moon excursion twice. It is one of the best we have ever taken. Swimming with the sea turtles is amazing.

St. Maarten - the America's Cup Regatta is one of the highest rated excursions in the Caribbean. You would have time afterwards to go to a beach that isn't too far away. We went to Dawn Beach for the afternoon and really enjoyed it.

St. Lucia - there are many great tour guides who could take you on an island tour, and then let you have some time at the beach between the Pitons. Frank, Cosol and Herod are three that people recommend. The drive-in volcano and the walk-in water falls are great. This island is LUSH.

Antigua - we did Eli's Eco Tour and loved it. Last year we did an island tour with Lawrence and got to see a lot of interesting sights.

Have you checked out Cruise Critic for more ideas?

The ship is amazingly beautiful. We have sailed her twice and would sail her again in a heart-beat. I am sure you will have a fabulous time.
