Hello all. I am booked to go on the Serenade in Dec and have been reading reviews on various sites on the ship. Quite a few have reported smelling strong sewage smells in the bathrooms/staterooms as well as around the ship. Others reported not being able to flush the toilets at all for a while!!?! The reviews were ranging from this spring to July... Anyone know if they are having problems and if they are going to have that issue taken care of any time soon? Or should I pack my nose plugs? :)

Ive noticed the same problem on the Grandeur. It seems to go away when the ship is moving. It seems that when the ship is in port is when they have the problems. These problems should, if your lucky, go away when you are at sea.

We just got off the Voyager out of Barcelona. The stink of sewage from this ship when we were out at sea towards the end of the cruise was truly awful. We couldnt use our balcony on the 8th deck. We had the plumber round thinking it was our bathroom and he said that the ship was dumping sewage out at sea as we were 12 miles away from land. I was shocked, to say the least, especially as we had recently watched a documentary on Royal Caribbean ships to show how they dont dump any sewage into the sea! I sailed on this ship in June of this year and didnt notice any sewage smells but we were on the 10th deck. I cant believe they dump sewage. Anyone heard of this? Sorry i dont have any information on the Serenade but thought i would mention what happened on our last cruise.

Hey, we are going on the serenade next year. Since no one is answering your post, please let me know how your cruise goes. Okay? We said on the Rhapsody last month and I could smell a faint odor everytime we waited for the elevators on deck 7. On the Splendor, it was rigth outside the dining room, no less. Did I let it ruin my cruise, no. I seriously doubt that RCCL was dumping their sewage out to sea, but I do know that they have to accomadate alot of people until it can be pumped out. Anyone that has an RV can relate to this.

I was on the Serenade in June and don't ever recall the smell. We were located in an aft balcony, if that helps any.....

Toilet waste on RCCL ships is stored in 2 seperate tanks. One is the black water holding tank which is landed shoreside to an approved treatment facility and a black water treatment tank where septic water is treated to the point of nearly being drinkable then realesed to sea beyond 12 nautical miles from shore. Unfortunatley it is not uncommon to encounter a ship that has a smell of sewage coming from it, at port or at sea. Someone also commented on toilets not working. If everyone just paid attention to the little sign above the toilet that says no foreign objects to be flushed things would be alot better. Toilet paper (and #1's and 2's) should be the only thing in there. That toilet paper is cheap for a reason, so it breaks down easy in the water and then flows through the system and doesnt clog it. What you need to know is how small that vacume piping is once it leaves your toilet. It is very narrow and anything that is flushed down there that doesnt belong will block the line clogging the system and not just your toilet but all other toilets in that section connected to that line.
