SF to Alaska 2010 Questions please

Hello,

Wow, have not been on this forum since 2002 when we last went to Alaska with Princess. We've been busy raising our kids and collecting money for our next great vacation. :) I now have 10 and 5 year old girls and we are ready to travel again!

We are looking for the simplest trip to Alaska. We live in San Diego and noticed that a 10 day RT cruise from SF is now available on the Sea Princess. I would LOVE to do this since we can drive to SF easily and avoid flying entirely. This would save us a LOT of money.

My questions are:
1) Are the seas rough north of SF? Is it like open water cruising all the way up to BC? Would we likely get sea sick in July or Aug (none of us are too sensivite).
2) Do we need to get 2 staterooms? We would definitely like balconies. Or can all 4 of us stay in 1 large suite? Looks like the "mini" suites say a separate bedroom but is there a pullout double bed too that the kids could use?

Thanks so much to any and all comments and help. This is our first cruise with the kids.

Hi Katherine. Glad you are back. Your one post earns you the title of dish washer! LOL.

I will be sailing on the Sea Princess in 30 days, and while I have taken the Dawn Princess before, I have only been in one aft suite on the ship. It seemed small but certainly more room then a balcony cabin. If I had two kids with me, I would want to sail RT out of SF on Celebrity, in a corner aft cabin on a M class ship. The family cabins are very roomy, and there is a separate living room/bedroom for the kids. It's wonderful! They get their own tv even! The deck is huge, it could hold probably 15 people easily. But, again, it will cost more than Princess.

As far as the seas, when you sail out of the Golden Gate and turn right up the coast, the waters can be rough. And an aft cabin will intensify that. I dont' know that the time of year makes any difference, but it might. =huh The first two times we sailed, we had the aft cabin, in May and June. I got sick both times. This time, we don't have an aft cabin, so I am looking forward to enjoying the entire cruise on my feet!

I know others will have more info for you regarding the cabins on the Sea Princess. Enjoy your planning!

Deck 10 - Baja / B-730. 832, 735, 737

Quad outsides are:
Deck 8 - Dolphin / D607, 608, 609, 610, 614, 616, 617, 618, 619, 620 and 623 (all of these are "obstructed)
Deck 6 - Emerald / All outside cabins are quad (32)
Deck 5 - Plaza / Almost all outside cabins are quad (28), with the exception of the four forwardmost on each side.

None are connecting ....

Welcome Back!

Not sure how close a family you are and want to be for 10 days - there will be two bunks and then your bed. It would be douable with a baloncy - but connnecting rooms or a suite would be wonderful. It is whatever you an afford or feel comfortable with.

Check out the web site of Princess and they give you photos and more info.

We are here to help if you have any other questions.

That stretch of water can be one of the worst experiences during the fall/winter/spring season.
July August should be just fine. Never been bothered during that time period...... but of course mother nature is mother nature. :)

Welcome Back and congrats on getting ready to Hit the Seas again. :thumb While the Sun Class ships are one of our Fav Class of Princess ships (as we have sailed on all 4 of the sisters) they do tend to have smaller cabins and MUCH smaller balconies. On the otherhand the Sun Class ships do have MUCH BIGGER mini-suite accomodations and they are Aft Balcony locations as well. However since the Mini Suite locations are only Aft on the Sun Class ships that also limits the # that are available and they usually become waitlisted soon after a booking has been released. I would personally NOT try and cram 4 people into anything less than a mini on this Class ship so if U decide NOT to go with a Mini then perhaps two cbins side by side or across the hall from each other would be your best option. Good luck researching that future time at sea with the family. :thumb

:wave Just wanted to say Welcome Back as it seems you got some good answers. With a 10 and 5 year old I think all in one cabin is do-able.

Welcome back to C@'s!! I have to agree with Nieciez, that given their ages, 1 cabin would be best, so I would suggest going for one with a balcony. That way the adults can be on the balcony while the children are asleep.

Happy planning!!
