Ship meals vs onshore

Does anyone have an opinion on whether it is worth eating onshore at the port stops, or should I time what I do around the meals. Freestyle dining on NCL will be an advantage for this of course, but I would still have to spend money I might otherwise use for shopping. I have heard that one should have an ale at either the Red Onion or Red dog saloons, don't recall which was most recommended. But is a sandwich just a sandwich onshore?

oh, forgot to ask. Is there someplace that has high marks for making the sacrifice to have a bite there rather than run back to the ship for lunch? I am stopping in Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway.

I am taking a thermal fold up bag to carry sandwiches from the ship. Order them from room service and put them in the ziplock baggies we are all supposed to bring with us . You paid for the food anyway. I learned this on these boards.

I never take anything off the ship, except water in my generic water bottle. Sure, you can order sandwiches, pack them, take them with you...

but for me, it's always fun to find stuff off the ship -- we're in the US, after all; food is safe! There are lots of interesting cafes, sandwich shops, and yes, fancy restaurants in all the ports. Seems kinda cheap to me, to pack food from the ship!

We're leaving in less than a week for Alaska, with friends. They'll be packing their lunches; we won't.

Well I can the budget minded wanting to save money, and this sounds nice if you're going somewhere you can stop and have a picnic say. I plan on browing the shops mainly and just breathing in the hopefully nicer air. I only have on place I could picnic, Mendenhall Glacier IF I go there. In London I went to a local shop and got cheap food and picniced in Hyde Park, cheaper than eating in a restaurant for lunch, so taking sandwiches I would do if in the same circumstances. Besides, I like to support local economies in some way. That's what being a tourist is all about. :) Partly anyway.

I went to the Red Dog in Juneau and had a ball, great burgers. And and Italian/Mexican place right across from St. Michaels in Sitka.
