I would not venture out on my own in Jamaica and I would consider myself well traveled and very capable.  Not that I would be in significant danger, it just wouldn't be enjoyable.  A lot of folks on this board have recommended Peat Taylor: http://www.geocities.com/peattaylor/island_tour.html

I can't recommend him personally, but I would stick with a ships tour.  Even on a ships tour, you may get harrased in some areas in Jamaica.

It sure is a beautiful island, however.
