Shipping Souvenirs

Our 1st Alaska cruise is in less than 50 days. We will be buying souvenirs, but do not want to lug them back on the plane due to all the restrictions with weight, etc, so we thought about shipping them back to South Carolina. We thought about our last Alaska port of Skagway of finding someplace in town that would do this. Has anyone else done this before? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Depending on what airline you are flying to send it home might cost the same as the additional suitcase charge. The only advantage of shipping it via the means that TC mentioned, is, it can be tracked.

I bought a fold up duffel bag for 10.00 at Walmart that I keep in one of my suitcases as a just in case of getting extra stuff home.

The Cruiser nailed it. Hit the post office, Up-Truck or Fed. I prefer Up-Truck as their stores have all the bubble-wrap, foam worms, etc. to get your stuff there safely.

Great info! Does anyone know where the Post Office, UPS or Fed-Ex is in conjunction with the ship in Skagway or Juneau? Also, if you purchase souvenirs or gifts to take back home, and you ship these items, do you still have to furnish this info with customs after you embark the ship?

In Juneau the main "touristy area" is a long walk or a short cab ride from the ships. (Down by the Red Garter Saloon) You'll probably find something there.

Skagway is not a big place. You can easily walk all the way through town. I think I remember a US Poast Office on the left side of the main street as you walk away from the ship.

I ran into this before trying to get something done, unless things have changed there are no Upuck or Fedexo or affiliate stores in Skagway. Only game in town is USPS, and the trick is not to be there on a Saturday or Sunday. And it goes Express Mail, don't even think about Parcel Post

Thanks bOB! All I could find for Skagway was a PO Box for the Post Office. We will hit Skagway on a Thursday, so hopefully we will not run into any problems finding or going to the Post Office.

Can't get lost in Skaway........................
and Broadway is the main drag so depending on where you dock you will either be at the foot of Broadway or you may be at the pier off of Congress Way, again can't get lost all paths take you to the intersection of Broadway and First street, from there you gotta go to town.

Just and FYI - UPS and FEDEX only have offices in Juneau.

Regular USPS offices as mentioned above. Also, most tourist stores will ship your purchases for you if you request.

I think we will try to ship from the gift shops, if not, then we will use the postal service. Thanks for the suggestions all.

Most souvenir shops will provide shipping. Let them ship your stuff upon purchase. We bought some ulu knives and had them shipped. Some ships won't allow "weapons" on board. Also bought a petrified walrus jaw cribbage board and am glad that it was shipped as I am sure it wouldn't have cleared customs in Canada.

Calgon and I went to the post office in Ketchikan and used one of the "ship anything under 70 lbs for $7.95" boxes, shipped our gifts to my parents to Mesa, AZ and they received them before we ever returned home. Was efficient, inexpensive and secure.
