I'm going to be stopping in St. Thomas and San Juan on my cruise in October. Does San Juan have good shopping? Or should I stick to St. Thomas.

Thanks!

I enjoyed both places. St thomas has quantity but I found nicer shops in San Juan. My most prized possession came from the Dooney & Bourke factory store in San Juan! A beautiful suede purse I have been wanting for 2 years!

But then again the 3 - 1 liter bottles of Kahlua I purchased for $25 was pretty good too and that was in St Thomas.

I love to shop in the Caribbean-- especially for craft items. We just enclosed our
patio into a year round room and I have collected several masks over the years
from India and Nepal. Since I have a port of call in San Juan on our upcoming
cruise in January, I plan to shop for Puerto Rican masks to decorate our new
room along with the other masks that I have. Also, I plan to purchase some
batik fabric during the cruise to make pillow covers for the sofa, etc. Batik is
a popular purchase item in the Caribbean. Another item I like to buy is pure
vanilla, which you can only get outside the United States and it is easily found
in the Caribbean.
Have fun shopping! Both St. Thomas and Old San Juan are wonderful and fun
places to shop! Philipsburg and Marigot in St. Maartin/Martin is another great
shopping mecca. In fact, I haven't found a place in the Caribbean that I didn't
like for shopping!

Have fun!

What shops will I find in OLD SAN JUAN? Are they mainly designer shops, upscale, or do they have any trinket shops? T Shirt shops, etc.? Are there any nice restaurants in Old San Juan? How far is it from the pier and how do you get there?

Old San Juan has everything! The shops range from arts & crafts, antiques,
boutique clothing, souvenier shops, jewelry- you name it! You'll enjoy browsing
the shops and seeing the sights at the same time! Many of the shops are in
historic buildings as well. There are many restuarants in Old Town- most have
menus posted outside their doors so you can see the type food served and the
cost. Have fun!

San Juan has GREAT shopping if you look in the right places! Im many instances, you'll do better than in St. Thomas. I'd suggest (as others have here) to keep your excursion to Old San Juan. You'll find great shops along Calle San Francisco and especially Calle Forteleza.

There are also some great places in that area to stop in for a nice cool pina colada or cuba libre to keep you in the spirit. The rum drinks are strong and the prices are right!

Happy shopping!

On Calle Forteliza, seek out the Puerto Rico Artisans Association shop. There you will find signed original hand made pieces; mask, Santos, paintings, etc. This is near the pub who started the 1st. Pina Colada, the Butterfly Place and my friends shop, Gems & Pearls. There are some designer shops like Coach, too.

I leave my gold and electronic shopping for St. Thomas or St. Martin.

We enjoyed the shopping in San Juan but didn't really buy that much. There were ALL kinds of shops but we found MOST didn't open until well after 10:30....so getting off the boat early is of no good if you're only in it for the shopping trip! I think they go by a slower time zone than us...lol...but really the town was asleep when we got off at 9 am. We walked to Old Town easily, then looped all the way around the outer edges to see the old structures, fortresses....very beautiful. BUT HOT! Take water from the ship and be sure to stop at Senore' Frogs (mid town) to get a cold drink or five! Again, that place was asleep until almost 2 pm. Food was good and beer was cold...can't go wrong there...and we picked up alot of cool souvenier tshirts for our college kid!
