Last year we visited St. Martin & stayed on the Dutch side, this year we are planning on taking a cab to the French side to Orient Beach. Can anyone please give me some input on shopping in that area. Are the prices similar to those on the Dutch side. Not looking for jewelry--liquor & gift items--maybe something unique. Is there shopping near the beach. A member of our group isn't crazy about the beach & may shop while we do the beach scene. If there is anything else good to see on the Frech side, please let me know that too!!! Thanks--5 weeks & counting down--Caribbean Princess!

Although I have never been to Orient Beach, I have twice gone from Phillipsburg to Marigot (French side).

Both times, in the area by the sea that resembles a town square, there were stalls with handi-crafty souvenirs and even some home made pepper sauces. There were other gift stores all within walking distance, and really great restuarants reasonable priced.

(If you're a little adventurous, you can pull into one of the supermarkets on the road between Phillipsburg and Marigot, and shop for unique international (packaged) foodstuffs. For example, brands from elsewhere in the Caribbean and a lot of Indonesian goods (the Dutch connection).

Even though we didn't shop, we really enjoyed walking around Marigot. Has everything, from upscale stores to the caribbean style market.

Just make sure you don't have to go bathroom; none of the french restaurant owners would let me use their bathroom. Finally I just walked into one because I had enough, and sure enough, as soon as I got out, that women comes and starts yelling how the bathroom is for patrons only. I just ignored her.

How much is the taxi ride from Phillipsburg to Marigot? My husband and I are planning on going there in the morning then taking another taxi to Moho beach to watch the planes land. Terri

We were at the open air market on the French side in August - prices seemed to be either really good (t-shirts), or really pricey (a top & skirt outfit my friend & myself both bought - after haggling down the price to what we thought was fair because we were both buying one, we found it on the dutch side starting $5 cheaper)!

It's a beautiful Island, have fun!
