Shore excursion in Hawaii?

Has anyone here been up to the Keck Observatory on the big island? I am just curious. We are planning to take that shore excursion, but I'm a little concerned about the height and getting used to it. Has anyone ever been up that high? It makes me a bit nervous, but I don't want to miss out on an incredible experience. :) Thanks!

I was on this tour and it was the biggest waste of money! I would avoid it. The altitude was not a problem as they give you soda and gross cookies for energy, but there is nothing there. You ar ein the Observatory (one small room looking into the telescope) for 15 minute, of course it is FREEZING outside so you are dying for the warmth. It is a tour that is worth about $35, not $100. I heard nothing but good things about any of the tours that went to the Volcano national park. Overal though, it was probavly the worst tour I was on in 13 cruises.

Thanks, kkorman. Since we're sailing in December, we ultimately decided against the summit tour, simply because I was concerned about the weather, but I'm so glad you wrote back. I think we're going to do either the Akaka Falls tour or the Volcanoes National Park tour. I'm sure either of those would be beautiful. So where did you stay on the Star? what did you think of the ship overall? We've booked one of the Romance Suites for our honeymoon this coming December, and I'm eager to hear if anyone else who's been on the ship has any recommendations as far as food, tours, sightseeing goes. Thanks!

We had a minisuite right below Lido deck I think. It was a nice cabin, a little smaller than I expected, but it was upgraded from a regular balcony suite. The ship was elegant and the dining choices are abundant. We really enjoyed the Red Lion Pub as we became good friends of the waitress there. The only negatives were the short times on the islands and the gift shop was blah. Not shops like most ships, but more of a flea market. Also there was not a whole lot of selection.

If I were you I would take the Volcano Nat. Park tour. I heard many people say it was a good tour... I have also heard a lot of people rent a car and go to the lava flow themselves. Short time in Hilo, but if planned right, very doable.

Have a great honeymoon!
