Hello,

I am wondering if you guys recommend to make reservations for Shore Excursion with the cruise liner or separately.

and how to do some on your own?

If you are new to cruising I would recommend you stick with the cruise line's tour excursions. They are more expensive and not always a personalized but you will be others on your ship and are assured of getting pretty much what is promised. On the other hand after cruising a few times I suggest you book on your own. Try going to websites about the particular ports and see what you can learn or and I hate to recommend other forums but CruiseCritic has a great Ports a call section that will give you ideas. Another option, just wait until you get to port. There are always tour companies who would love to assist you. Try to find another few people on the ship tha would like to join you. The one exception to booking on your own: if a tour is much more than 1/2 day you have to think about timing. Make certain you will be back on ship an hour or two prior to sailing. If you are with a ship excursion there will be no problems but on your own, you could be left waving good bye to the ship. this almost happened to us onec. NMnita

If you make plans with NCL and at the port decide not to go. are you still liable for the fee's. I am asking this because they charge you for them after the trip so I am wondering if you know ?

yes you will be charged, but if you book with NCL or any other line, for that matter and cancel the day prior to the cruise you normally are not charged. You just can't cancel the day of, you can understand I am sure. Many of the tours sell out, if someone cancels at the last minute the cruise line is out the money as the tour company will charge them according to how many passengers they expected to have.

You can go to CruiseCritics and search Ports a call as well as enter any port you will be visiting and check for site seeing tours. You should get some ideas.
