We're going on our first cruise in late november - west carrib on Mariner. my wife, my two teens and me. Our question is....if we are interested in going on a couple shore excursions (snorkling, jamiaca waterfall...should we book now thru RC...or should we wait until we get on-board and book.

2nd question - We are flying out of OHio early Saturday 6 am to catch the 5 oclock pm Port Canaveral launch...how many would advise
insurance ?

Thanks Folks.

sounds like you have plenty of time to make your ship on Sunday......its a gamble if you want insurance or not..some swear by it...some dont.....

Another thing is, if the excursion runs late, RCI will wait for you. Unlike if you book through another excursion service,I have seen some left at port.

I agree 100%. We always book through the cruise line because we are also purchasing "insurance" the ship will not leave without us. We always book 4-5 months in advance. The last cruise we weren't sure what we wanted to do and had family with us so we waited until we were on board and had limited selections. Book in advance.

Hello PH8, You said:
The OP said they were booking thru RCCL..........

Actually, RCCL is merely the old abbreviation for RCI. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has been Royal Caribbean International for a long while now.

Hello Ytakbob, Are your excursions all showing already?

I was looking at the Royal Caribbean board yesterday and most of our excursions were still not available for booking. Our Enchantment of the Seas cruise sails on November 5. I was very surprised to see yesterday, that the excursions for Coco Cay are available. Not sure when they showed up, as I hadn't checked that particular page before. We probably won't be booking anything there anyway.

.
I wasnt disagreeing about abbreviations......I was just saying the OP was booking their excursion right thru the cruiseline....

Also even if one buys insurance, that does not mean the ship will wait for them........

Oh. PH8, I misunderstood. I get you now.

About woullebear's post, I think she may have meant the term "insurance" figuratively. Not that they would be buying actual insurance. It's just that if you book the excursion through the cruise line you have a far greater chance that the ship will either wait for you, or catch you up to the ship. Whereas if you book the excursions independently, on your own, and miss the ship, then you would truely be "on your own." Meaning the piece of mind is worth the extra money the cruise line's excursions cost.

Hello Ytakbob, Where in Ohio are you from. We're live in Ohio too. In Parma (a suburb of Cleveland, for the non-Ohioans). About the insurance..well I always recommend inusurance, and I always buy it, but after 15 cruises we've never have needed to use it. Came close a few times though.

I can tell you're thinking of insurance in terms of having our lovely Ohio winter weather possibly ruin your trip. Well as you know that is always a possiblity around here. If the planes aren't flying you're not going to catch your ship. If that's your only concern, then consider just how much of a hit losing that entire cruise cost would be to your budget. Because there are no refunds for canceling on the day of the cruise. Possibly you might fly out to the first port, and catch up to the cruise there. How badly would those flight changes, and overnight hotel cost hit you? (That's if those are even possible to arrange.)

But remember insurance is not only about missing the ship, or for delays in catching it. It seems to me that the most frequent use of the insurance has been for those who have had to cancel their cruises. It's also for lost or delayed luggage. And more importantly for medical costs in the case of illness or accident while you are vacationing. Also we've have seen more than a few Cruise Addict's come home with tales of broken bones. Remember most regular health insurance companies will not cover you when you are out of the country.Probably the biggest expense you could incur while cruising would be the cost of medical evacuation in a serious emergency. I haven't a clue as to what it costs to medivac someone off a ship, but I'd bet big bucks, it ain't cheap.

Book the excursions through the computer so you do not have to stand in line if you know what you want to do. I am not sure if rccl will stand behind any delay in flights, unless they booked your flight. And than i am not sure. Sorry i can not help you there. I usually do not buy the insurance but we live in fl and i usually travel to the port the day before and stay in a pre hotel. Usually you want to board the ship early, for instance we usually board the ship at 1:pm even though they do not depart until 5:pm there are many things to do and explore if you get there early. Is traveling a day in advance and staying at a hotel an option for you?? Either way, sure hope you have a great time

The insurance will be of value if your flight is delayed or canceled or you miss a connection. Since you are flying same day I would seriously consider it. Also the medical portion is great if you need med attention from the ships doctor or on shore. If your own insurance will reimburse you for a ship medical visit, a shore side medical treatment in a foreign country or a medivac then maybe not so important. If your air isn't cast in stone maybe consider flying in a day early to reduce any stress. Finally if one of you gets seriously sick two days before the cruise, no insurance you loose it all if you can't go, with insurance you only loose the deductible, worth considering as well. Usually you will get better deals from an independent like Access America rather that the cruise line.
