Carnivals new policy Please be aware that we have made a change in our Dress Code policy.
Below you will find the new policy as it will be stated in our marketing materials:
What to wear?
Casual attire is the order of the day. We suggest shorts, sundresses, tank tops, etc. for the ladies, and for men; shorts, polo shirts, T-shirts, etc. will do. We suggest you wear rubber-soled, low heeled or flat shoes for extra traction while onboard. The use of any footwear with wheels, including but not limited, to Heelys© shoes, is prohibited on board our ships. For dining you may want to dress up a bit and/or bring along a light sports jacket or cardigan.
Most evenings we have a Cruise Casual dress code, but there are those Cruise Elegant evenings one or two nights throughout your “Fun Ship†voyage, where you will have the opportunity to showcase your more elegant attire. For those who want casual attire for dinner time, the Seaview Bistro on the Lido Deck is open nightly, and has a more relaxed theme. Both dress codes for the dining rooms are described below.

Cruise Casual Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Sport slacks, khakis, jeans (no cut-offs), dress shorts (long), collared sport shirts; Ladies - Casual dresses, casual skirts or pants and blouses, summer dresses, Capri pants, dress shorts, jeans (no cut-offs). Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Casual dinner for ladies and gentlemen: gym shorts, basketball shorts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, and sleeveless shirts for men.

Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so. Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too! Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Elegant dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, T-shirts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, jeans, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, and baseball hats.

Special Sailings
For Canada/New England / Alaska cruises: Sweaters, lightweight jackets and raincoats are suggested. Casual clothes that can be layered easily are highly recommended. Bring a heavier sweater if you are traveling to the glaciers, along with a raincoat and umbrella, because it is often cold and windy in such areas.

For South America and Europe cruises: Comfortable shoes and a just-in-case raincoat. Bring a sweater if you are traveling to the glaciers, along with a raincoat and umbrella, because it is often cold and windy in such areas.Special note: It is essential that you wear the proper apparel when visiting the Vatican and other religious sites (no bare legs or shoulders).

The new policy will be enforced beginning with May 19th sailings

I never even heard of the term until I read this new policy. Nonetheless, out of consideration for others (not their feelings, but rather their eyes) I will not be wearing shorts to dinner.

Oh heck, people already go to the dining room on RCCL in shorts.......................One fool did on formal night while the rest of his family dressed up...........unfortunately,they were at my table...........he was a jerk.....had the "its my vacation and I'll do what i want" attitude.. I felt bad for his lovely dressed family..

Have had a pair of my tuxedo slacks altered into Bermuda shorts for the Duck Cruise in May of 2011. Will still be wearing 'formal' but modified for 'Mooda.

I've seen it on their web site for a while. Personnally you'll never see me in shorts at dinner on a cruise. I'm just one of those traditional cruisers. Since I seldom have to get dressed up for work, I enjoy dressing nicely for dinner on a cruise or when going to a nice restaurant on land for that matter.

I think i can accept tuxedo shorts(since bermuda shorts usually are knee length, or a couple of inches below the knee), worn with a dress shirt and jacket. I would consider it "Cruise formal" since after all, the climate usually makes true formal wear a little warm(unless you are cruising to alaska in the winter lol).

Hehe... i think if i were to get a tux with shorts i would definitely get the jacket with tails... that would look both awesome and disturbing at the same time.

I would so look like a penguin..... LMAO just thinking about it. While laughing about it i think i am actually warming to the idea and will consider having a tux altered into shorts...

You know, just to play devil's advocate for a minute...

Since it is a cruise, Couldn't we compromise a little. Like let them wear shorts as long as they are tuxedo shorts(bermuda style, below the knee)and must be accompanied by a dress shirt, and jacket. This could be considered "cruise formal" . A sort of compromise on the formal dining atire that still would keep dining from being a slovenly mess of rednecks in tank tops and daisy duke shorts.... complete with a mouth full of snuff and dixie cup for spitting... the sad thing is i live in central florida where tank tops and dixie cup spittoons rule... it's just plain nasty ..

Bermuda Shorts, also known as walking shorts or dress shorts, are a particular type of short trousers, now widely worn as semi-casual attire by both men and women. The hem can be cuffed or un-cuffed, around one inch above the knee.

They are so-named because of their popularity in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, where they are considered appropriate business attire for men when made of suit-like material and worn with knee-length socks, a dress shirt, tie, and blazer.

True Bermuda shorts are not to be confused with "clam diggers" or "capri pants" extending below the knee. Cargo shorts may be a similar length, but are typically baggy or less "tailored" than Bermuda shorts.

I've seen shorts being sold here locally that are at, or an inch below the knee which are being sold as bermuda shorts... but you're right, typical bermuda shorts do cut at the knee or slightly above. I think with their popularity, this is probably simply a variation of the classic. I personally like my shorts to cut about an inch or two below the knee, and consider anything more than two inches below the knee to be Judo shorts, as i also consider any pants that rise more than 3 inches above the ankle to be capri pants(crappy pants if you ask me, they do not look flattering, and men should never be caught dead in them)....

If you don't want to dress up, don't go to the dining room. The Windjammer is open and you can go there. We had an evening on one of our cruises after a day of sun that we just didn't feel like getting dressed up, so we didn't. But we didn't walk into the dining room dressed like that with the attitude of "hey, we didn't feel like dressing up but here we are. Deal with it because it's about US." We had a great meal at the Windjammer with other people wearing shorts.
The dining room is a place to be treated with respect, and to treat OTHERS with respect.

I am more of a traditionalist. I actually like having the formal dining nights.

Unfortunately, this is the way the business is trending. They are trying to capture the younger market. When I took my first cruise in 1984, the average age for a 7 night cruise was mid 40's. I believe it is now in the low 30's.

When I was on my honeymoon cruise, Feb, 1991, we were late for dinner one night and I just flat forgot to put my tie on. We got stopped at the dining room door and the Matre D' handed me a God Awful looking tie to wear if we wanted to enter. I ended up running back to my cabin to get a decent one. I don't know if any cruiselines would do that today.

Hmmmm, let's see..

Madris shorts, black socks, white shoes and one of those t-shirts with an imprint to look like a tuxedo?

Does that qualify???

I can not imagine wearing shorts for dinner in the MDR, was on a RCCL cruise about 20 years ago and we had a great group of people at out table, including a English couple, he had a Tux on the formal nights but when he took off the tux jacket there were clowns all over the shirt, he also had a red nose that he put on briefly.
