With the same fierce passion that characterizes all of the America's Cup teams, Shosholoza is set to participate in the 2004 America's Cup race and bring to life what seemed a near-impossible dream: the first South African team to enter the most important sailing competition in the world.
The South African Challenge was created in Cape Town by Captain Salvatore Sarno and the Izivunguvungu MSC Foundation for Youth, the sailing school which has trained 80% of the Shosholoza team and produced champions like Golden Mgedeza, Marcello Burricks and Solomon Dipeere.
The team name - "Shosholoza" - is deeply rooted in South African culture. It comes from an old song sung by mine workers and others engaged in hard, physical work and literally means ‘go forwards' or ‘make way'. It is with this motto of passion and tenacity that Shosholoza, with its spirit and determination, has captured the hearts of the public to the point of being nominated ‘the soul of sailing'.
Shosholza is a self-made team where everything has been done in-house from designing, engineering and building the boat to the choice of team colours and graphic design that is reminiscent of the graffiti of the Ndebele, Zulo and Xhosa populations.
After a tough beginning in 2005 Shosholoza, raced for the first time in Marseille to finish in seventh position, then came back with a fifth position in Trapani and ended up eleventh in the championship and ninth in the Louis Vuitton ranking. In 2006, thanks to hard training and to the new afterguard in place, they jumped to seventh place by winning one-third of the races they entered.
After improvements, Shosholoza is now ready for the challenge in Valencia with a new mast, new sails, numerous modifications to the bow and the stern, a strong team and the goal of being in the finals
The Shosholoza sailing team of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) is scheduled to participate in the 32nd America's Cup.
