Side Trips in Alaska

Is it necessary to make your reservations for side trips before you leave on the cruise or can you make them from the ship? Does anyone know of any side trips in Juneau, Skagway or Ketchikan or Victoria B.C. that are especially good?

We have been to Alaska several times. In Skagway we walked off the ship and took a tour from a local full time resident who had her own van. In Juneau we took a city bus, lots to see. Ketchikan is a walking town and you can pretty well walk anywhere. When you visit Victoria there is a shuttle to downtown (not very far), you can either walk or take the shuttle. Downtown Victoria has a lot to offer all within walking distance. If you want to see Buchart Gardens you will have to take a tour. There are horse drawn carriages that will take you around downtown which is very scenic and a wonderful experience. Enjoy your trip!

The city bus goes to the glacier. Take the bus to the Mendenhall Valley. Here's the link:

We didn't go to the glacier but met people on the bus did. You can see by the map the buses go right beside the cruise ships. The schedule and fares are on the website. We met some interesting locals on our bus trip. It's sure a lot cheaper than the tours. Enjoy your trip!

Does the bus take you to the glacier? If not, how close to the glacier did the bus carry you?

I was told the bus went right to the glacier. We went to Costco, as wierd as that sounds we had taken a tour to the glacier on a previous trip. We just wanted to shop. People on the bus were going up there, I don't think it's a big deal. You may want to email or phone the transit company and find out from them. Sorry, we didn't go all the way.
