I read this on carnival's website:

What about money?
Sail & Sign
"Sail & Sign" is Carnival's cashless onboard credit program which allows guests to charge their purchases directly to their personal account for convenience throughout the cruise. Registration will take place during the embarkation process or onboard at the Purser's Office.

The following deposits are required per guest:
2 - 4 Day Cruises - $100 deposit per guest
5 - 8 Day Cruises - $200 deposit per guest
9+ Day Cruises - $350 deposit per guest

Does this mean EVERY passenger MUST put up $200 for a Sign&Sail card?

Can I opt to NOT use a a Sign & Sail card?

If I am traveling with my husband can we share a card?

Thank you so much!

Just wondering...

Working on total expenses - as to whether we MUST have, in addition to cruise costs, and money for spending an additional $200 to place on this card; if required..

Thanks!
Mandy

No each and every passenger must have a sail and sign card. The card is not only your on boasd account but is also your room key and your boarding pass. Your picture will be embedded in the magnetic strip on the card and will be read by a scanner each and every time you get on or off the ship. Your husbands aaccount can be combined with yours so that you will have only one bill but each must have their own card. The deposit amount is suppose to be per passenger however I have heard of people who made a single deposit per cabin (not sure how they arranged that.) You should note that the very first item to appear on your account will be $9.75 per day per person for gratuities which would amount to $136.50 for the 2 of you for a 7 day cruise.

Mandy ,

I've been on carnival 6 times now and you have to have money down on that Sail & Sign Card. You can use a Credit Card to put $200 down , or pay the purser cash when you first step on the ship (which is what I always do) Then on the last day of the cruise , you'll get a receipt slipped under your door telling you if you have a credit coming back to you , or have to pay more.
A sail & sign card is used to purchase drinks , gamble , and open your cabin door. Bartender's will not accept cash or credit cards , nor will the casino.
The best way to do it is as soon as you get on board there, go straight to the pursers desk and put the money down otherwise you'll be waiting in a massive line and lose time standing while your all excited about being on this ship.
When is your cruise?

We didn't have to put any money down. We listed a credit card on our documents and nothing was taken out for a deposit on the final print out we got at the end of the cruise.

Hi,

We were on the Pride last May and we also didn't put any money down. We just gave the Visa card number. The casino will take cash. It's about the only place on board ship that will. The sail and sign card is your ID and room key so you each get one. We punched a small hole in ours and hung it on a lariat so it was easy to carry around when not having pockets. Not putting any money down makes it easier to get off the ship as well. You really don't want to stand in the line of a bunch of people settling accounts on the last day. The ship TV has a function that allows you to see your bill as the cruise progresses so you can keep tabs of what's going on with your bill. We actually got 2 free drinks. They never got billed!!! Take care and have a great cruise. If you have any other questions feel free to email me.

I emailed you but then thought someone else may want to know. Can i place my son, 20, and his friend, 23, on my credit card to get their Sign and Sail Card? They do not have credit cards. How do people do this without a credit card? I appreciate any response. I am learning alot reading these message boards. I can't wait to go!!!!!

If I am not mistaken, you can also change the automatic gratuity amount and tip based on what you feel like at the end of the cruise.

Yes you can put your son and his friend on your card. I have done this when taking my childen and their fiances. Even tho we girls had a room and the guys had a seperate room everything was still on my one cc. Just tell them when you check in. Am taking my daughter and sil over Xmas this year for college graduation present and I will have a cabin and so will they with my card for all 3 of us.

When you use a credit card for your Sign & Sail account a "hold" for the recommended deposit amount. You can also use a Matercard or Visa debit card.

If you give them your credit card info, there is not deposit and no visit to the pursers desk.

I was on the Paradise just a few weeks ago and we didn't use a credit card at all. After we boarded we went to the purser's desk and put down $700.00 in travelers checks, but a couple next to me only put down $100.00(not even enough to cover both their tips for the week mind you), but the purser didn't say a word. Also on the Paradise as soon as you put down your money your tips are deducted for the week not per day. He said some ships do it by day and some get the whole week over right off the bat.

Have fun.

i had this same question as I am sailing on the Paradise on 12/14/03 and was trying to get all of my finaces in order. First of all, let me say, I DON'T hAVE A CREDIT CARD! I called Carnival and said "Let me get this straight. I was planning on taking $450 in spending money and now you are telling me $400 of it will have to go to Sail and Sign. I am not planning on buying anything with it but tips? " I was so mad when I called there. I finally persisted and persisted and a very nice Carnival employee named Lorenzo checked with about 5 different departments and the final conclusion was : NO you don't have to have the high deposit if you are paying in cash. They just do it for their own saftey net. They will not bar you from the cruise, you just have to go to the pursers desk and tell them that you only have $150 or whatever and that is what they will put on the card. Emmy

You'll love the Paradise. When you put down your $150.00 your total tips for you(68.25 I believe) will be off by morning) and the rest will be up to you to spend for drinks or what ever because you cannot pay for anything out of your pocket. It must come off your sail and sign to purchase anything at all, and if you have any money left on your sail and sign it will be under door by 7:00 a.m. in the form of a check. Also if you have travelers checks you can cash them at the pursers if you'd like to break some bills before you go ashore.

Have a great time.

My son is 12 and my niece is 17 cruising with my husband and myself on a 3 days cruise.....will we have to leave $200 for each of them as well for a sail and sign card? That would $800 sounds kinda steep for kids who will not be drinking. I plan on buying the kids soda cards. That's another question.....can we put the soda cards on the sail and sign cards?
