Most ridiculous British laws...actual laws on the books.

(I'm sure we have some good ones here in the States, as well :))

1. It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament.

2. It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside-down.

3. In Liverpool, it is illegal for a woman to be topless except as a clerk in a tropical fish store.

4. Mince pies cannot be eaten on Christmas Day.

5. In Scotland, if someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your toilet, you must let them enter.

6. A pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants, including in a policeman's helmet.

7. The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the king, and the tail of the queen.

8. It is illegal to avoid telling the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing.

9. It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament in a suit of armour.

10. In the city of York it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow.

I'd love to know how they came up with number 3.....=lolgang

There are so many old laws on the books even here in the US.

When I was first working in govt in an Assistant Manager position in MA we began to go through the Town Bylaws.

Now MA was a very old state so some of the bylaws went back 200 years.

I remember there was one bylaw that prohibited women from being in public in shorts and midriff tops. It specifically spelled out what parts of the body had to be covered.

There were all kinds of bylaws about horse drawn carriages and things like that there were just so outdated but still on the books and could still be enforced by law.

I think the best one that really made me laugh was one about married couple relations that I won't post here.

I love reading these silly things! And, you're right there are a lot of silly American Laws as well.

In Los Angeles, you cannot bathe two babies in the same tub at the same time.

In Zion, Ill., it is illegal for anyone to give lighted cigars to dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals kept as pets.

In Carmel, N.Y., a man can't go outside while wearing a jacket and pants that do not match. << Note: this law isn't silly. Write your legislators today and get this PASSED in your area now!!>>

In St. Louis, it's illegal to sit on the curb of any city street and drink beer from a bucket.

In Hartford, Conn., you aren't allowed to cross a street while walking on your hands.

In Baltimore, it's illegal to throw bales of hay from a second-story window within the city limits. It's also illegal to take a lion to the movies.

If you want to read more....http://monster-island.org/tinashumor/humor/laws.html ... the list seems to go on forever!

And when you delve even further it seems there are silly laws the world over! ::eek:
