Smoking on Cruise Ships

I was wondering about the smoking policy (where is is ok to smoke). I do not smoke and my boyfriend get stuffed up with to much smoke. So I am looking to find out where it is allowed - this way maybe we can avoid the major smoking areas.

It varries from ship to ship. If you have already booked a cruise, let us know which ship and we can probably help ....

Lucky for you cruise lines have cut back on smoking areas over the years. On Carnival in general, the only places people are allowed to smoke indoors include the casino and one or two bars/clubs depends on which ship you are on. Outdoors, people can smoke in designated areas. For example on many ships they will designate the starboard side of all open deck as smoking and the port side as non-smoking. Signs and ashtrays clearly indicate where people can and can't smoke.

I always thought that the Starboard side of the outside decks on Carnival ships were smoking however in December on the Inspiration there were ashtrays on both sides of the Lido and people did smoke on both sides. I did notice that one guy got up and went to the rail when he lit up but most didn't. There were a couple times there was a breeze that blew the smoke our way but it wasn't to bad. Also on the Inspiration, the guy in the Piano bar apparently was a no smoker because he had no smoking signs at the bar surrounding the piano. So the piano was the only place in there you could sit without a lot of smoke. Fortunately there were not a lot of smokers in there when we were there. We have been in other ship piano bars and found them pretty smoky. I think this was the preference of the piano player.

We are platinum on Carnival and have enjoyed more that 15 cruises. On all ships they designate one side as the smoking side, usually the stbd. Sometimes you may need to get the help of the staff to enforce the rules. My wife is very sensitive to smoke, so we tend to stay out of the bar areas where they allow you to smoke. Carnival use to have a smoke free ship on the Paradise, and that was very nice, we enjoyed the entire week on that ship without seeing a single lit cigarette. even in the Casino or piano bar, or outside on any of the decks. I wish they would bring that back.

Regarding which side of the ship... Not sure of Carnival's policy but on Celebrity the Hotel Director on board determines which side of the ship is for smoking.

Regarding the Paradise. The non-smoking ship idea was a good experiment. Sadly, Carnival determined that people who smoke also like to drink and gamble more. Paradise ended up pricing extremely inexpensively in order to fill her up. She was the lowest revenue ship (both in bookings and on-board) in Carnival's fleet so that's why they scrapped the non-smoking idea.

Azamara Cruise Lines (a subsidiary of RCCL) is totally and completely NON-SMOKING. If a passenger is even caught with tobacco products, they shoot him/her and throw their body overboard. Celebrity Cruise Lines has a NON-SMOKING policy on all balcony's and smoking is only allowed in one or two places on each ship. RCCL is about to introduce a NON-SMOKING policy on all their balcony's also and they only have one or two places on their ships where one can smoke as well. If even the hint of smoke bothers you, do your homework and go with one of these lines. My wife and I like to smoke on vacation and we only do it on our balcony and in the one or two designated areas of the ship. We are very conscientious about non-smokers and try to be as courteous as possible. That's why we sail with HAL, which is not even our favorite line. So as certain cruise lines fully accommodate non-smokers, non-smokers need to realize that they can't have it their way, all the time, everywhere. If you're too lazy (or cheap) to do your homework and go with a non-smoking line, stop whining.

As others have said, smokers have designated areas where they can smoke including their staterooms on Carnival. On the Splendor the only staterooms that one cannot smoke in is the Spa staterooms. In fact, you must sign a contract that if you smoke in a Spa cabin you will be fined $250. In fact, that is one reason I booked a Spa cabin to avoid the residue of smoke left-over in some cabins. However, I think Carnival does a really good job of sanitizing their cabins from the smell of stale smoke. Hope this helps.

You are not whining....you are simply doing your research to find which ship and cruiseline is right for you.
Yes, there are cruise lines that restrict smoking but they tend to be more expensive. No need in paying more
for a cruise because of someone else's drug addiction.

I would suggest that Carnival can still be a good fit with a little "tweaking".

My first choice would be the Splendor now in California. They offer nonsmoking Spa cabins where smoking is not allowed in the cabin OR on the balcony.
I would suggest you book at PORT side cabin, if you book a Spa Balcony....since the crew smokes on the Starboard side.

The Dream is not out yet...but will be based in Port Canaveral, Florida and will also offer non-smoking Spa cabins.

My second choice would be a Spirit class ship. There are 4 of them located around the country.
The Spirit is on the West Coast. The Legend is in Tampa, Florida, The Pride is headed to Baltimore and the Miracle
is currently sailing out of New York.

This class of ship gives the guest the ability to walk from one end of the ship to the other without walking through smoke.
The designated smoking areas are the Casino, Piano Bar, Sports Bar, Disco and Starboard side on the outdoor area on Lido.

I would not recommend any of the Fantasy class ships, since they have several design flaws that allows the smoke to travel easily (like from cabin to cabin because of the open space under the cabin doors.) The location of the Casino makes it virutally impossible to walk down the Promenade without exposure. There are several tables that are almost IN the Promenade. These ships also do the shorter cruises which can be more of a party cruise and are generally less expensive which can draw more smokers.

The Conquest class ships will probably be ok as long as you sail out of Florida. These ships to draw more families.

Please know that this information is not guaranteed. It is simply a collection of our experiences over the past 10 years (and 30 cruises with Carnival ) from various ports on all but 6 of their ships.

Sometimes dealers in the casino will post a no smoking sign. Most smokers are considerate of others and stick to the side of the ship where it is allowed. However, many times I have seen non smokers sit in that section then complain bitterly. They are usually told to go to the non smoking side when their complaints become vocal or obnoxious.

I am sorry I was just wondering - was not aware I was "whining."

You were not whining. You were expressing a valid concern. Although 'dougfw' has been a member here since 2005, he hasn't been very active and apparently isn't aware of the 'no-flame' standards we have all worked so hard to maintain. I am sure that, with time, he will be a bit more understanding. ...

Just got off Splendor yesterday. It was way harder to find a smoking area as opposed to non smoking. There is no smoking allowed at all on the Lido deck, including all outside bars and pools. Get a Spa balcony and you should be good to go.

I do not consider myself "Politically Correct", but rather, I try to be polite and considerate of Non Smokers and tend to go off by myself to smoke. My wife does not smoke, so I do not smoke in my cabin. But I do get a balcony and go out there. I will smoke in the Casino and in the Cigar Bar, but again, try to move away from others.
But this has been my "Choice".
But I do get a little upset when I make the effort to go off to an area (outdoors) away from everyone else so as not to bother them and to have someone come into my area and then complain.
I am a business traveler (Some say "Road Warriror") and can understand an estabishment for going non smoking such as alot of hotels are doing. I personally hate the smell of stale smoke and have even carried a small container of Febreeze.

So if Carnival wants to have a port/starboard smoking policy, go for it, just make sure it is my side of the ship

You are correct about the Splendor.

This was a ship that was built for Costa. When it was nearing completion....Costa realized they did not have the bookings they needed to supply it...so Carnival stuck a funnel on it and made it a Carnival ship.

On this specific ship...Deck 9 (Lido) has the retractable roof...so it is basically 95% an indoor area....this is why there is no smoking allowed on deck 9. However, on deck 10 and 11 outside...smoking is allowed.

It was so odd not to have smoking by the pool...but it was because this is considered an indoor space because of the roof.
